ah dear, those Xindi Aquatics really need updating. I'd be willing to try it, but I think I'd need something far more advanced than Blender

You could do that in Blender. It'll just take practice. Blender can play up with the bigger software damned well. Eg:

I should have angled the camera down slightly in the Farpoint one and I couldn't get the Hirogen tractor beam into the Hunters pic. Maybe some bright spark would photoshop it in?
