Sun Tzu Class - USS Athena
« on: January 18, 2009, 03:41:13 AM »
Here's a ship I meshed out today.  No name so far, though I've tried a few different variations on ideas I've seen in many other ships, including a triangular secondary hull, as well having the nacelle pylons extend out from the very bottom of the ship.  It's tough to get them to integrate smoothly from there.

As you can see in the pictures, the ship will also have a separable saucer for MVAM.  MVAM seems to me vastly underused, so I figured I'd give a go to it as it's not that hard ot mesh out the ship that way.

I've also tried a few different styling cues for the engines.  Still plenty of work to do on the whole thing, mind you, such as impulse engines, torpedo launchers, etc.  I'd like to ramp up the modeled details on this ship a bit, given some time.

So far 8100 polygons with zero errors, and I haven't gone through to reduce where I can yet.  I'm going to shoot for very high detail with a ceiling of 15k for polys.

Ooh nice. Looks like the Soulwolf.
"To live on as we have is to leave behind joy, and love, and companionship, because we know it to be transitory, of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Now that's one sweet design.  It definitely feels like it would come from the post Voyager coming home ships.  You know they had to use some of the technology that the Crew brought back home with them! 8)

Wow, nice. Reminds me of the design sketches I've seen of Ezri Dax's Aventine.

Rebuilt the nacelle pylons, and I'm going to rebuild the connection points.  What was there was really sloppy and not particularly aesthetic.

Added torpedo launchers, including one that will be hidden during non-separated flight.

I also added a bridge area, though I plan on spicing it up a bit.

I've also decided that i didn't like what I was planning with the deflector, so I scrapped it.  I'm going to try and do something more original with it.  Suggestions with drawings are welcome.

Perhaps a triangular deflector? Would seem to fit the secondary hull nicely and I can't think of any other ships with one.

Hmmm....well, I liked the suggestion of slipstream that the old deflector gave.  It's a shame there's not a lot known about slipstream drive or you could probably design something.  Hmmm, I'll give it some thought, maybe I can come up with something for you. ;)

Could you post a side and forward view of the stardrive area? Might be able to come up with something for the deflector.

EDIT: Was about to suggest something similar to what Jason wrote. An Excelsior-style alcoved deflector dish might look good. Not too many ships with that design.

How about a Deflector similar to the one on the Selfridge A?

I'll test out an Excelsior style deflector and see what I come up with.

Impulse engines (I hope you like the placement, because I'm lovin it! :D), and new nacelle connections.

edit: i'm happy with the deflector now.  I did go with the excelsior style inlet, but I have the round deflector a bit of a retro look combined with some Century class influence.

Wow, DJ, I'm lovin it.

If I could say something...
I noticed the impulse engines are both receded into the secondary hull and jut out from the back of the saucer.  That area behind it, where it cuts out a bit of the secondary hull, I'd texture it with some heavy plating so that it can stand the force of the impulse directed alongside it.

I dunno why, but something about those forward torpedo tubes don't really sit well. Perhaps better with a more Sovereign-placement?

As for the Excelsior style deflector, it looks perfect just as it is. And the impulse engines is a welcome change from what is standard. I like them alot.

I agree with Darkthunder on the torpedo tubes, they just seem out of place like that.  The deflector is awesome looking though!
