In May 2002, Dubya visited Paris and held a joint press conference with President Jacques Chirac.
White House correspondent David Gregory, addressing Dubya, asked, "I wonder why it is you think there are such strong sentiments in Europe against this administration?" He then turned to the French leader, saying, "Et vous Monsieur le President Chirac, qu'en pensez-vous?"
Dubya reacted by throwing what Maureen Dowd would call "un petit fit": "Very good," he snapped. "The guy memorizes four words, and he plays like he's intercontinental."
Gregory rose to the challenge, cooly offering to continue in French.
"I'm impressed - que bueno," Dubya replied. "Now I'm literate in two languages."
