theyre now saying the storm is going to be like mega-strong off the coast, so everyone from Boston down to New York City down to Washington DC (again) will get around 8 to 12 inches along with 50 mph wind gusts; a classic nor'easter...
fortunately it hasnt snowed around here in the last 6 weeks or so, its been mostly dry...  but tomorrow is gonna be crazy...  sucks

well, this warning alert was inevitable...    *sigh :(

Issued by The National Weather Service
Boston, MA
3:52 pm EST, Tue., Feb. 9, 2010

*** Winter Storm Warning in effect from 8am Wednesday to 1am EST Thursday ***

The National Weather Service in Boston has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow.  The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

This Winter Storm Warning includes northern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and south of Interstate 90 in Massachusetts.  This includes the cities of Hartford, Springfield, Worcester, Boston, Providence, Taunton, Brockton, Plymouth, Fall River, and New Bedford.

Snow is expected to develop between 7am and 10am from Hartford, Connecticut, to Springfield, Massachusetts, to Providence, Rhode Island.  For the remainder of the region including the greater Boston area, snow will overspread the region between 10am and 1pm.  Snow will become heavy at times across the Warning area Wednesday afternoon and continue into the evening.  Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely during this time.  This will result in hazardous travel Wednesday afternoon and evening, especially during the late day commute.  Travel is not recommended after noon, as the snow will quickly become very heavy producing whiteout conditions.

As for snowfall totals, snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches are likely across the Warning area before snow tapers off Wednesday night.  Higher accumulations of 18 inches are possible across Rhode Island and interior southeast Massachusetts.  For Cape Cod and the islands, snow amounts of 4 to 7 inches are likely where some sleet and rain will mix in for a time.

Northeast winds of 40 to 50 MPH will affect the area Wednesday afternoon and night.  This will result in poor visibilities and some blowing and drifting snow.  This may result in blizzard conditions for a time across Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts.  The snow will be wet along the coast and bring the potaential for down tree limbs resulting in power outages.  These strong winds may also impact eastern Massachusetts from Plymouth County northward to Cape Ann.

A Winter Storm Warning is issued when an average of 6 or more inches of snow is expected in a 12 hour period, or for 8 or more inches in a 24 hour period.  Travel will be slow at best on well treated surfaces, and quite difficult on any unplowed or untreated surfaces.

yay double post!  yay postcounts!  lol :P

out of boredom, ill post the next alert from the national weather service lol

Issued by The National Weather Service
Boston, MA
12:25 pm EST, Wed., Feb. 10, 2010

Snow slowly spreading northward across Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts.

A band of moderate to heavy snow, with visibilities reduced to one-half mile, is slowly spreading northward across southern Rhode Island and the south coast off Massachusetts near Buzzards Bay.  As of 1130 AM, 2 inches of snow was reported on the ground in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.  Heavy snow was reported at Westerly, Rhode Island, with the visibility as low as one-quarter mile.

Light rain was falling in parts of eastern Massachusetts wherever the precipitation was lighter.

The low pressure system responsible for the wintry weather continues to deepen off the New Jersey coast.  As it shifts northeastward early this afternoon, we are expecting moderate to heavy snow to become more widespread with whiteout and blizzard conditions across northern Connecticut, northern Rhode Island, and in Massachusetts from Worcester to Boston and southward to the Cape Cod canal.  In addition, northeast winds will be increasing to 20 to 30 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH or higher by mid afternoon along the coast.

Once the heavy snow moves into the region, it will quickly accumulate on roadways and travel will become quite hazardous.  Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will likely occur and visibilities should be reduced to below one-half mile at most times.

heh ya - no doubt theyll upgrade our warning to a blizzard warning in a few hours...

Issued by The National Weather Service
Boston, MA
2 pm EST, Wed., Feb. 10, 2010

Moderate to heavy snow will continue through the evening along the south coast.

Moderate to heavy snow was currently falling across the south coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.  These conditions will continue through the evening across the region.  Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will continue at times.  The snow is very wet in nature and may result in downed tree limbs and scattered power outages across the region.  In addition, northeast winds ill increase late this afternoon and especially this evening with gusts at times in between 40 and 60 MPH.  This will cause blowing and drifting snow and near blizzard conditions by tonight.  Travel is not recommended.

lol they really screwed up in the forecast for this storm...  turns out, the temperature was just a couple degrees warmer than they thought, so while the snow was heavy, it did mix with sleet here and there; but moreso it was pretty much melting as soon as it landed so it didnt pile up...  it really didnt begin accumulating until after it got dark by which time the storm was practically over...  so we only wound up getting like 3 or 4 inches of snow instead of a foot...  :)
20 miles south, tho, those suckers got like 7 or 8 inches of snow...   but its amazing how 3 or 4 simple little degrees can make all the difference between a couple inches or a foot of snow...
winds were ferocious tho...

I live in Southern Ohio, and we just got our third whack of snow. Thee is a total of 2 and a half feet and now its all drifting. And whatever melted, it has now completely frozen. Southern Ohio is not equipped to deal with this much snow in such a short amount of time (5 days). My county is crippled and under a Level 3 Snow Emergency. And on Highway 71, there was a 50 car pileup, they are still cleaning it all up. But the snow continues and the temperatures continue to drop.
