Title: Modeling the Almera N16
Post by: Vladko1 on January 25, 2010, 01:14:38 PM
Because I havent seen anywhere the Almera on 3D model, I started slowly to draw her. In some casses, drawing on rhino is a bit difficult and slowly, but still is the program that I can draw. Here some viewports and pictures of the car

Who can tell me which is the best way how to place the blueprint? Using planes or boxes? Or something else?
Title: Re: Drawing the Almera N16
Post by: baz1701 on January 27, 2010, 11:08:36 AM
Create a plane roughly the same size as you blueprint.

In matiral editor open your pic and assign it to the plane.

Use the scale tool to correct the proportions.
Left click in the top of the view port (over the left, front or top text) and change to smooth / highlights.

You the clone tool to make copies and rotate and move them until you have all the planes covered. Left click on each one and select freeze and un check show frozen in grey.

Start to model.

I made the planes in 3ds max but I stuck on the mapping, so Rhino was in great help :funny. Here are the planes.
Edit: on the viewports everything is grey ;(

update
EDIT: what happened to the 3ds max? It wont extrude :'(
Start from the beggining and its very difficult without extrude :(

Curved bodies n three dimensions like that are going to be difficult with or without an extrude tool. But you have the orthographic projections set up nicely and seem to be coping well.

How the guy from the tutorial which Baz gave is copying the edges?
Title: Re: Drawing the Almera N16
Post by: baz1701 on February 04, 2010, 06:15:40 AM
To extrude an edge, first select the edge you want press and hold shift and drag the new edge out.

Did you manage to fix the smoothing errors completely? As I can see a few on the latest shots of the exterior. I'd hold off texturing the rest until you've done that (Hell, I could help if you can export to obj or LWO). Also, if you're intending for this to go into GTA4... Just curious, what's its current polycount? Judging by the wireframes earlier it was HUGE. (Can help with that, too.)

While it is a beautiful model, I'm just not sure how well it'd go as it is in GTA4, but then I've only seen the game played and not actually tried it myself. You still may want to save a second copy if the car, and tone down the detail on the wheels (You can quite easily get away with tyres having all of the faces along the width converted into a single face rather than 10), engine (Similar case) and lights for example.

In a racing game however, it'd go brilliantly.

I think it would look even better if you'd give the headlight covers even more transparency and show more detail of what's inside, but leave the reflection as is. Same goes for the fog- and taillights.
