Title: High Poly Vor'Cha
Post by: Phoenix Bondi on May 03, 2013, 10:07:28 PM
Ok guys please bare with me as this is somthing that i have always wanted to do, but have always worried about it due to my skills still being somewhat limited. Also knowing how people feel about the ICONIC Constitution class being played with...now i'm going to give my own swing at it, but TRY to keep it true to the original to a point....WELL more than the JJ'Prise anyway so again i BEG OF YOU, please just bare with me as i learn fall crash and burn as this is nothing but an experiment as i have NEVER done high poly work before!

Those JJ phasers are actually very similar to those fired by the TMP Connie in Wrath of Khan.

Post by: hobbs on May 04, 2013, 05:22:53 PM
but in wrath of khan there were 2 (two!) beams not 102 (a hundred and two!!!) lol im messing dude

i agree similarity exists just jj went way over the top lol

What I'm saying is that even in this shot, it's pulsed.  They aren't two solid beams.

But they aren't pathetic looking points of light either, they have more of a beam to them than a break.

As for your ship, looking nice. How big is it? Those phaser banks look a little undersized.

below are some pictures of the weapons that are going to come out of each of my weapon bulls on my connie, the middle is pure beam *classic style* and the 4 around it are for cannon effect *JJ style* - the ball at present is only a place holder, so bare with me,

I once worked with a 210k-poly Sovereign.... you could clearly see the lifeboats serial number from a few dozen meters apart :P
even the registry number was carved into the saucer armor XD

be careful tho.... as you cut the geometry to make carvings and extrusions, you're gonna cut transversal edges and get a lot of misplaced vertices, which in the end will get you smoothing errors and duplicated edges.

I strongly suggest you break the design down, and figure out what you can build as a whole (like those phasers, for instance) before adding it to the hull, or the hull *to* it.
carving the windows, for example, will make the hull split into multiple misaligned edges and vertices.... and what was once a perfectly smooth hull with the right amount of vertices, ends up being a spiderweb of bent edges and smoothing errors :P

here you have the ability to play with the geometry space as you'd like.... so, take advantage of it... shape first those sections that would otherwise mess with your finished mesh, and spread the error margin all over the ship.
the bigger the spread, the lower the general error.
....ultimately, you just scale the thing to shape and get rid of any errors.

All those added parts feel a bit fat and chunky.  Like this ( instead of this /.  Otherwise, it's pretty good.

Just the fact that every ship has the bridge at the top....which is an obvious target for enemy ships....Eh, I can see his stance, but I like it anyways

It wouldn't be a "bridge" if it were anywhere else. :p

It's looking good, Phoenix. Original, yet familiar.

my griffin class has no exposed bridge, its bridge is on deck 3 :D

your ship is looking awesome ( i know you've not done more to it yet but it is)

Because of the way Hobbs directed the last sentence at you speciffically, that's what threw me. I need a holiday. xD

You're link doesn't go to your build. xD

(I believe you were telling me about it in game yesterday. Plasma beams, correct? I need to get my Engineer sorted as well. Full respec and setup.)

I've been there since 2005/6. :p Bridge Commander with the fleet was great back in the day. I hope Excalibur really sets in, especially if it has a multiplayer mode.
