Got to thinking in the shower this morning, who was Spock's first officer in star trek 2.
Can't be Chekov as he was first officer of the Reliant.
Uhura and Sulu were on Kirk's staff as shown by the travel pod scene.
McCoy just would not make a good XO. And Scotty would have to be on the bridge so would hate to leave engineering.
And Saavik was only a Lt and a cadet to boot.
So who was it?
-
The dude sitting at Engineering station on bridge ? but he wore the same uniform as Saavik if I'm not mistaken and red collars stands for cadet rank.. not sure about that tho, if Saavik was LT she couldn't be cadet, could she ?
-
mabey it was Tuvok? Spock has a habit of collecting fellow vulcnoids, after all (i should have a look. i mananged to find a VHS copy of TWOK)

She was a Lieutenant when taking the Kobayashi Maru test. I think that's a sign of officer training in Starfleet. So yes, she was still a cadet in the fact that she hadn't graduated from the Academy yet.
To answer you baz, likely Spock did not have a first officer. After the Enterprise returned to dock after however many years Kirk kept it on the frontier, Starfleet finally MADE Kirk accept promotion, promoted Spock to captain, and then reassigned the Enterprise as a training vessel. Likely she was never intended to actually go on duty, so why would Spock need a first officer?
-
so why would Spock need a first officer?
SOP for any naval ship is an XO must be designated for chain of command to work in the captains absence. his XO would have been the next in rank, and if a training vessel it wouldnt matter if cadet or not.
the conversation between spock and kirk: Spock:"as a TEACHER i am fit to command this vessel. however, should the enterprise go into actual duty, you would assume command"
kirk assumed command, bridge stations went to usual crew.
-
I know the RN works a little a differently, a ship does not require an XO but does need a 1st LT which continues his/her job in that department. Its just that they have the extra job of being seconed in command. An XO is a dedicated job role and runs all departmental necassities like paper work and watches, though on ships smaller than destroyers a 1st LT is only needed because of the smaller crew size.
-
Then possibly Scotty would be serving as first officer? Yes he's busy in the engine room, but he does seem to be the only non-cadet on actual duty aboard the Enterprise.

You think about these things in the shower? You're a lost cause. :P

It's the very first sentence in the thread bro. L2Read. Seems like you're a lost cause too. :P

Indeed. (http://www.barbelhunters.co.uk/images/smilies/smiley_rock.gif)
^That, by the way, needs to be a smiley. Heck, even better, I can make it a Vulcan salute if you guys want to put it on the forum. :P

All I know is that if Saavik was XO, then something's wrong with Spock's brain. Or it's a case of species nepotism.
-
At least they could keep up with regulations :P

Don't forget that Saavik is only half Vulcan. She is like him a child of two worlds that is why Spock has taken her under his wing.
OK here is my 10 Cents. Spock's XO was called Commander Lawrence H. Styles. He was on leave for Kirk's training mission as they had a bad history dating back to their early career about the Farragut. After the Genesis incident Star fleet could not give Sulu the Excelsior as promised and Styles was the next officer inline for a command.
It is a strech but it works for me.
-
It is a bit of a stretch, but it would explain Styles' unrelenting arrogance.
-
Nice call Shadowknight :P

Well, it's not to say that the first officer couldn't have any other jobs. Spock doubled as XO and science officer throughout the original series - and if Kirk and Spock were off the ship, Scotty usually had the center chair. So I'd say the XO would be Scotty.
