Title: Merchandise from Trek XI

Slightly updated pic of the Enterprise toy I found on another forum.  Looks nice, better than I thought at any rate.

Not unless you have Quicktime Pro.

Slightly updated pic of the Enterprise toy I found on another forum.  Looks nice, better than I thought at any rate.

Is it going to be a model kit or just a toy?

If its a model, that is relatively small enough, then it will have a place on my shelf. Right next to the small ENT-D shaped bubble-bath bottle I found a little while ago, that I was given as a kid.

Being a Trek fan wasn't a very well hid secret for me in my family, lol.

That is the toy made by Playmates.  It is more likely that a resin kit will be made before a regular styrene plastic kit.  MY first impression of the toy is that it won't be big.....maybe around 14 inches long (rough estimate of past-Trek toy ships).

That's what she said!

But seriously? I'd probably buy it, if I saw it in a store around here. Ever since I broke my Voyager kit I've needed something overly nerdy to sit on my monitor to knock over every time I get up. What can I say? The colours are purdy.

I like them.  :arms:

Come to think of it... even though the movie hasn't been released yet, I'm kinda getting used to that ship now... girr.

I think we have Wiley to blame for that. :P

And yes, the ship is supposed to be 14 inches long...which makes it shorter than my TWOK 1701 and my 1701-E.  But still just as awesome.  I preordered mine on Entertainment Earth and just now received a notification that the price went down too! :D

I don't think this has been posted.

Could be wrong.

At least the Transporter room still looks like the Transporter room.  Mostly.

Well now, a little digging and I found some images of the Hot Wheels Star Trek line-up, minus one.  The line up includes the 1701-A(or 1701 refit), a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, the Reliant, the Enterprise-D, the STXI Enterprise(which hadn't been confirmed til now), and Nero's squid/Vorlon-esque Romulan ship Narada(wasn't known until now, and also not pictured).  The only oddity is that the bussards on the JJ-Prise are red, but this is likely because the toy is a prototype.  According to Entertainment Earth, this will not be available until May. :(

Well it would be a little weird to release XI merchandise months before it comes out.

Well, Entertainment Earth lists the earliest shipping date for the rest of the merchandise as March.  Of course, Playmates told TrekMovie that the release date is April 16th or so.

And I don't care so much about the JJPrise as I'm already getting the electronic one.  I want that BOP.  8)

I want the ENT-D.

Roughly, in inches, how big is 1:50 scale? I never undertood the way scaling works for diecast models. My '1977 Starsky And Hutch Gran Torino' and 'Dukes Of Hazzard Dodge Charger' car models are 1:18 scale so I hope 1:50 scale doesnt mean those Trek models would be huge.

If anyone knows of a life-size TNG transporter pad replica though, let me know.  :D

I don't know how big they are, but they can't be 1:50 scale because they're not even scaled to each other.  I mean, really, the Reliant wasn't that big.  :P  I'd guess these are at most 6 inches long.  Maybe as big as the Johnny Lightning ships.  But metal!

I;ve noticed that the bussards look like a glass container.

But look at the toys! Theres really cool stuff on page 4 i.e. tricorder, communicator, phaser, JJPrise...or have I said too much?

Tricorder, couldn't care less for, communicator, maybe, phaser, maybe.  I've already pre-ordered the 1701, but I doubt I'll get the Narada.  Anything beyond the 1701, honestly I'd have to see it.

I don't know why, but I want the tricorder and the phaser. The communicator looks like a Motorola with a big blue blob in the middle.

I mostly agree with this. I do however hate the phasers. They look like those cheap plastic guns that arn't based on any sci-fi in particular that you used to get when you were 7 or something close to that age.

I want a red shirt though.

Honestly, the phaser I'd have to see it first, cause if it's THAT shiny, then heck no.  But at least it looks like a gun instead of a boomerang.  The Tricorder isn't exactly bad looking, I mean it has the look down.  It's the fact that it says "TRICORDER" on it that turns me away.

And no, not glass.  Transparent aluminum. ;)

Well, the advert is FOR children, not for us collectors. :P

EDIT:  Attached is an image of the Hot Wheels die cast Enterprise in-box.  Obviously this is a pre-production prototype, especially since the box says this is the Enterprise-A.  I enlarged the picture to fit with what the box measurement is (8.5x4.5), so this pretty accurately shows how big the ship is.  Small, but not as small as I thought.  I want. :D
Title: Re: Merchandise from Trek XI
Post by: WileyCoyote on April 12, 2009, 09:13:39 AM
Yesderday, I found the new USS Enterprise, and I bought it.  I found the new USS Enterprise at the local Toys"R"us- they had four of them along with the tiny bridge playset figures.  They did not have the bridge playset, roleplay toys, or the taller figurines.

The ship is molded in light gray plastic with gray and black detailing.  The deflector is molded in clear blue with a little bit of golden detailing.  It was already pre-built in the box, unlike the previous Playmates ships.  The new Enterprise is pretty accurate, and it uses 3 AAA batteries, one in the saucer, 2 in the engineering hull.  The stand is sturdy too! It is a little bit smaller than the Art Asylum TOS Enterprise.
The sounds are activated with a press of the bridge dome illuminating the various LED lights..  In my opinoin, the new Enterprise is definitely superior to the other Playmates starships.

There are 4 total sound effects and each has a different lighting effect.
Kirk: "Maneuvering thrusters, Mr. Sulu."
Spock: "Captain, Engineering reports ready for launch.........(warp boom)"
Kirk: "Arm phasers, fire everything we got!" (phasers, then torpedoes, then phasers again)
Red Alert Sound.

Here's a link to the pictures and sound effects:
http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd223/WileyCoyote1701/Playmates%20JJ%20Enterprise%20toy%20ship/

I also sent my little review with pics to Trekmovie.com to see if they can use it. :)

O.O Gahhh...mine probably won't arrive til middle of this week, if I'm lucky, Entertainment Earth JUST got their shipment in Friday.  Why oh why didn't I spring for next day shipping?  And that battery arrangement is odd...why didn't they just put three in the engineering hull like everyone else?  But they did get rid of the stickers, that makes me super happy, I hated those.

Sweet, now that they're coming out, I can start on my kit-bashing!

Along with a TOS and TMP mash-up with the JJPrise, I'm also doing what I am calling the "Airship Enterprise", making it look like a WWII ship. And one I intend to buy just to blow up. :D

I still hope that AA will be allowed to do a version of the new Enterprise at some point.  This one looks alright, but compared to the TWOK Refit Enterprise, it is still sadly lacking many, many details, such as azteching and plating.

Johnny, you're gonna spend 40 bucks on one of these just to blow it up?

That's the idea. I just gotta find a decent camera that has a high enough frame rate to catch the explosion.

I'm sure there are a lot of die hard TOS fans that would gladly see the Nu-Enterprise get blown away.

I have my Enterprise!  And after comparing it to my TWOK 1701 from AA, this is my conclusion.  The component parts are the same size except the nacelles on the TWOK are slightly longer.  Except for the added toy thickness to the JJ-Prise toy's saucer, the two saucers are exactly the same size.  The engineering hulls are more or less the same size.  As is the neck.  So, basically the thing is differently arranged to present a smaller target(so to speak).  And the ship is no less or more top heavy than the other Enterprises I have.  The lights are surprisingly brighter than the AA ships, and the sound effects are...kinda meh.  Of course, my ship suffers, not from uneven nacelles, but from a slightly tilted saucer.  On mine, the saucer is tipped pointing upwards slightly, which is also an affliction on my TWOK 1701.  Odd.

Took my son to toysrus a couple weeks ago, I saw 3 or 4 diecast starships.  One was the Connie refit, the Reliant from TWOK, the Ent D, and a battle damaged Ent E.  Wish I would have bought the damn things now, oh well.  Maybe next time.

Ah, the Hot Wheels Star Trek ships.  My Wal-Mart had the 1701, Reliant, and the Ent-D too.  In terms of accuracy, I'd say the 1701(TMP version of course) got the worst treatment.  Hardly any painting, the registry's mis-spaced, and not enough other stuff.  The Reliant got the best treatment though, and if I didn't already have a Johnny Lightning one, I'd get it.  Hopefully the JJ-Prise, Bird of Prey, and Narada look good.
Title: Re: Merchandise from Trek XI
Post by: Bren on May 11, 2009, 12:06:03 PM
I too took the saucer apart on the JJprise.

Though I didn't do it, if you remove the Impulse engine crystal, the "Docking Clamp" (or "screw" if you're feeling saucy) appears to be beneath that. I was impressed with the quality of the inner workings, especially the light conduits bringing light to the registry floods. It's a pity the hull detailing isn't as impressive.

I do love the subtle veining effect in the bussard lighting, it harks back to the TOS Enterprise's bussard light pattern, though here it's blue.

I can imagine that a well executed model of this ship would be gorgeous, but the hull detailing is so minimal that this ship looks very underwhelming next to the TWOK refit ship.

Funnily enough, the toy tries to avoid the curse of the drooping nacelles by mounting the nacelles slightly further forward on the pylons. This has the unintentional effect of making the ship more familiar to those used to the proportions of the TOS ship.

As for the "Tilt" of the Saucer, it's an illusion, at least on my ship. The bottom of the secondary hull and the nacelles angles up as they go back, this gives the same effect during flybys as the TOS ship did when it flew past tilted "at warp". It's a nice touch in the design, but I can understand why it would make you think the saucer was tilted up. Look at the starfleet pennant. On mine, the edge of the saucer and the pennant are parallel.

Can't wait for the AA Enterprise D. Or the TOS HD one. I lack a classic Enterprise.

I got the Playmates Nero figure from a friend.

The likeness is very very good, and the detailing is fantastic, down to the tatoos and scars. His leather trench coat is modelled here in rubber, so it flows around his poses very nicely. The articulation is superb as well, with the arms ball jointed at the shoulders and elbows, and the legs sturdy enough to stand in a variety of poses. It makes my old TNG playmates action figures look like cartoonish dwarfs.

I got 2 for one on the Kirk and Spock action figures in Smyth's toys in Cork. I gave them to a friend, but had a chance to inspect them before hand. They are nice likenesses, not as good as Nero, and Kirk's neck was a tad dodgy. They too wear rubber tunics, a nice detail I hadn't noticed in the preview pics. They have lots of accessories, including a "Live Long And Prosper" hand for Spock.

If you're a fan of SlashFic (I'm definitely not), we discovered that they can be posed with each other in passionate and romantic embraces. Not that that's my kind of thing, ladies ;).

I also got the Playmates Star Trek XI Phaser at 33% off in Smyth's toys in Cork. For 12 bucks, it's not too bad, though I wouldn't pay much more. The sound is terrible, extremely crackly and tinny. There are 3 sounds, best to worst: Power up (little dial on the back), Stun (with blue nozzle forward), and kill (red nozzle forward).

Like in the movie, the nozzles flip around from stun to kill, with separate sound effects for each. I prefer the stun sound. However, this feature is simple spring loading, and you have to manually set it back. In addition, on my particular toy, the kill nozzle tends to bounce back, out of alignment with the rest of the phaser, and stay there.

The finish on the toy is overly shiny, and looks as plasticky as it feels, which is a lot. The movie version was more of a matte effect chrome, this is just tacky silver.

Other than that, it's a good replica, shape wise. I have issues with the design in the movie, it reminded me too much of Galaxy Quest, both visually and audibly. The toy faithfully recreates the shape, though.

I dipped into Burger King and shouted "STAR TREK!" at them. They gave me a communicator for ?1.25, which was nice. This is the BK stylised communicator. It's modelled on the movie one, but is shorter, and more colorful. The screen at the top is solid purple, and the controls at the bottom are all one button which play a quote, "Beameup!!". I type it like that because it's extremely quick. And angry.

For a buck 25 it's extremely nicely detailed, though I would have preferred a chirping sound instead of "BEAMMEUP.".

Kickass Neb, me too!  Still waiting on BK to bring up the Klingon BATTLECRUISER(I refuse to call it a Warbird, and I blame T'Pol for that terminology being applied) and the Jellyfish.  The Enterprise and the Kelvin are passes though, far too super deformed.

The only ship that doesn't look deformed is the shuttle.

The Battlecruiser is so deformed I was expecting a travesty in the movie, but I was thrilled to see something very very close to a K'tinga in the Kobayoshi Maru test.

FourChan, there is nothing wrong with collecting merchandise. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I would gladly collect merchandise. I just don't have the room to display any. I mean hell, if there was a life size stargate for sale somewhere, I would gladly display it in my back garden and not give a damn about what people think.

Hopefully, a smaller diecast Trek XI Enterprise will be avaliable soon. At least that I would have room for.

FourChan, how does having all the toys make you a sad person?

FourChan, there is nothing wrong with collecting merchandise. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I would gladly collect merchandise. I just don't have the room to display any. I mean hell, if there was a life size stargate for sale somewhere, I would gladly display it in my back garden and not give a damn about what people think.

Hopefully, a smaller diecast Trek XI Enterprise will be avaliable soon. At least that I would have room for.

The Hot Wheels one is supposedly coming out in June.

I knew about the keychain. The thing with diecast models though is that they often have high detail and are a small size. How do you think I am able to fit my Red Dwarf, Starbug, Scutter and x-wing models on-top of a single xbox 360, lol? The keychain is small but it also loses a lot in detail.

Probably true, but I ordered me one anyway.  :P

And I have both the Hot Wheels JJ-Prise and Narada on pre-order at Entertainment Earth.  The JJ-Prise because it's cool, and the Narada because...well, I have a certain morbid curiosity as to just how they put that thing together and avoided making it a hazard to children.

I wish that I would be able to afford the QMx Artisan Studio Scale Enterprise when it's released though...I'll probably have to settle for the smaller replica.  Hopefully they do the Kelvin too.

Probably.  I just hope that it doesn't get delayed til next year like the Playmates version did.

I got my JJPrise keychain today, which surprised me since I ordered it Friday.  Not that that's a bad thing, but I may have to have it checked for matter/antimatter reactions. :P  Pretty good quality though, pretty much same kinda quality that the ol Micro Machines had.  One cool little detail is that the bottom of the saucer looks extra plain at first, but under certain lights, you can see an aztec pattern, which is a pretty cool touch.

I build models of cars and should be able to help, 1:50 scale is 1 inch equals 50 inches, i.e. your 1:18 General Lee & 1976 Striped tomato, 1 inch to you, is 18 inches to them

Quantum Mechanix has aquired a license to make Trek XI based merchandise.
http://www.quantummechanix.com/Star_Trek.html

These are the guys that did those alternate paint works for the Trek XI Enterprise model on the official movie website but they were never released to the public.

Given the quality of their F-302 models, this will be beyond awesome. It would be good to compare a QMx Enterprise to the Playmates one. I didn't ever buy the Playmates one but hopefully there will a comparison review up on YouTube or something like that after the first line of models is done by QMx.

I really hope they do a U.S.S. Kelvin model somewhere down the line aswell.
Title: Re: Merchandise from Trek XI
Post by: Shadowknight1 on June 12, 2009, 07:27:00 PM
While Old News there Billz, it is awesome news indeed.  Though, QMx didn't do the paintjobs on the alternate Enterprises, it was their model.

Now, it's not mentioned on the website, but QMx told TrekMovie.com that they are going to make considerable improvements to the model for its production run, including better lighting effects in the engines and running lights, new lighting for the impulse drive, and even an opening shuttlebay.  Now, this is for the Studio Scale model, so it'll be about 34 inches in length and will probably be extremely pricey, but a billion times better than the Playmates ship.

The smaller, more affordable model will still have handpainted details, but no lights.  It'll be around 10 inches long.  From the sound of their press release, I think that a USS Kelvin model isn't out of the running.  They're also going to do some prop replicas.

What's kinda sad is that this was the same stuff that Master Replicas was going to do originally.  Just another sign that Master Replicas has really started to die since losing the Star Wars license.

I know that. What I am saying is that there is no reason why DVD owners can't get a 3rd disc to make up for them not having Blu-Ray. It would accomidate the rest of the special features nicely.

Looks like I'll have to start hunting for HD downloadable versions of the trailers and TV spots again though, which sucks.

I'm in a state of...I guess the word "shell shock" would be sort of applicable, except this is in a good way.  Quantum Mechanix has revealed their Artisan Replica of the USS Enterprise.  I was expecting little more than a slightly better lit version of the ones that QMx made for Paramount.  I was wrong.  This ship is [colorful metaphor]-ing GORGEOUS.  I would honestly clear space out for this ship if I can afford it.

Also, QMx has just ruined any chance of me getting that Enterprise.  You see, if I could afford it, and had a place to put it...I would also be able to afford and have a place to put...THIS:

And see...I could never choose between the Enterprise and the Serenity.  Not ever.  Especially when both have super stunning lighting effects.  So.  I guess I'll wait for the smaller 15" inch Enterprise replica.  I should be able to afford that, and even without lights and sound it'd probably kick Playmate's Enterprise in the aft.

I'll probably get it when it comes out.

There is also this

It gives back story for Spock's decision to stay on Romulus.

Just a huge FYI to those expecting more ST09 merch....Playmates has suspended their upcoming Star Trek toylines, including the next waves of figures, ships(ie. the Narada & Jellyfish), etc.  This also includes their planned TOS toylines and the mini-ships they were also planning, near as I can tell.  This may be permanent or it may come back.  Either way, unless Art Asylum/Diamond Select puts out a stellar line next year, Star Trek's going to be off the shelves again.  Damn shame, if you ask me.  I at least wanted a Kelvin mini-ship.

Was there any given reason why they suspended the line?

Basically, poor sales.  At this moment, there are too few retailers with interest in Star Trek toys for Playmates to put out a second wave of figures that might not sell.  Which I can understand, about the only things that moved quickly off our shelves was the Enterprise.
Title: Re: Merchandise from Trek XI
Post by: Shadowknight1 on July 27, 2011, 11:12:04 PM
Dammit Jim, I'm bumping this because there's news!!!

Okay, first things first.  http://store.qmxonline.com/Enterprise-Metal-Plated-Phaser-Replica_p_126.html# This baby is a metal plated stunt replica of the phaser used by the Enterprise crew in Star Trek 2009.  It has no lights or sounds or even a swiveling nozzle, but it does look a heck of a lot nicer than the Playmates phaser.  This phaser is apparently metal plated, so it should be sturdy.  And for a prop replica to be $50 is astounding.  I plan on ordering one of these this Friday.

Secondly, and slightly related, is the QMx Artisan replica of the Enterprise from TMP, TWOK, and TSFS: http://store.qmxonline.com/Enterprise-Refit-Artisan-Replica_p_135.html  I say slightly related because the fact that this baby is coming out shows that the JJ-Enterprise won't be too far behind.  Unfortunately, that goes for the price too.  The ship is going to run about $5,000.  That's a lot of cash money.  The refit Enterprise features the complete aztec detailing, full running lights, blinking formation lights, running impulse engines and warp engine lights, fully lit deflector dish that can change from yellow to blue, mock-firing photon torpedo tubes(flash red), the officer's lounge behind the bridge is detailed and has a small person in it, the botanical garden has little "shrubs" inside as well as a person, and the shuttlebay/cargo area contains shuttles, workbees, and a lit "runway" like in Star Trek V.  Basically, all the stuff that a really determined person could do themselves with the right kit, but this is put together for you.  Again, I bring this one up because I'm sure that some of the same features will make it onto the ST2009 ship.  I'd personally like a set of small-scale ships like the Enterprise and the Kelvin at about the same size as the now defunct Hot Wheels ships, but QMx currently has "no plans" for small scale ships.  So everyone who's with me on that, SPAM THEM!!!

Ahem.  Now, onto more affordable things.  Starting in September, a new IDW Star Trek ONGOING(ie. not a limited mini-series) series will begin based in the new reality created with JJ Abrams' film.  This series will have both some new adventures with the Enterprise crew and will re-imagine some classic TOS episodes with the new crew.  I like this because that can take some of the pressure off of the films.  The first issue will launch in September and will be a new take on the classic episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before..."  Read more here: http://trekmovie.com/2011/06/17/star-trek-movie-universe-comic-series-coming-in-september-to-reenvision-classic-tos-episodes/

So there you have it folks.  Merchandise from this movie isn't dead exactly...just very hard to find right now.

I think the Trek XI Enterprise DVD holder is the best one and most accurate.

Thanks for that heads up Wiley, I think I'll probably get that to pretty much replace my Playmates one.  I don't like the too-thick hanger lip and my particular ship has a mis-aligned saucer both from the front and side(tilts way up from the side) and mis-aligned windows and the registry under the hanger door is messed up too.

The only things I don't like about the DVD holder that I've seen in pics is that they placed the torpedo launch bay at the wrong spot and it isn't detailed well, the warp engines don't have a painted bar across them, and the deflector dish doesn't look nearly as good.  Ideally, I'd take the front part of the neck, the deflector dish area, and the bussard collector caps off the Playmates ship and replace the DVD holder's parts, but that doesn't work that way. :idk:  I just hope that some time in the near future that either Quantum Mechanix will release a small, non-lit Enterprise or that Art Asylum/Diamond Select will do the JJ-Prise.  But then, if it were the latter, we'd probably get the ship by the time Trek 13 came out, considering how freaking SLOW Diamond Select is!

Around the time of the 2009 movie, a person from starshipmodeler.com was going to release a resin kit of the new Enterprise, but received cease and desist letter from Paramount. They are really protective of property from the new movie, yet somehow someone was able to release the Kelvin-variants(but not actually calling it the Kelvin.)

That's a damn shame since there isn't a model to speak of at all now that the only one that was planned was canceled.

And that must be why companies can feel justified by using Tobias' Enterprise in their materials. :|
