Cryptic Studios are looking for more Ship Artists to work on STO. Industry experience is not a requirement, thou like all jobs, increases your chances of being hired.
I'm absolutely certain that the BC community could muster up a number of talents who could potentially out-do anything currently in STO. I suppose this job opportunity mostly applies to US residents, but even if you don't leave in the immediate vicinity (San Francisco area), Cryptic may assist in moving you to San Francisco.

Quoted from their current lead ship artist:
"I had just under 4 months industry experience. Having the skills, know-how, drive, and personality are more important."

Well I'm out lmao. I just can't model using sketch up, let alone 3d studio max!
Guys, I'd at least apply for this if I were you. Use some of your mods on here as part of a portfolio and all that!
Who knows, if it's one of our boys who gets the job then we might see a marked improvement in their meshes and texturing! Not to mention getting a man on the inside
For those of you who are applying, good luck!

They have a strict poly count and what not, and textures normally have to work on more then one kind of ship, so I doubt they can improve them that much.
-
I'll be sending my resume with cover sheet this weekend. Wish me luck!

So sue me for being optimistic.

Duly noted. If you get the job, you are to send us photographic evidence :P
(and a few thousand zen :P)

Awesome. Was gonna send you an email suggesting this very thing, if you hadn't seen this thread/link :P
Lord knows, STO could definitely use some better ship artists. Hope it goes well for you Wiley.
-
We'll keep fingers crossed  good luck mate !
-
Good luck Wiley, hopefully the stuff from STO I showed you gives you an edge. :D
-
Good luck Wiley!

Can't blame you for that.
Not sure who comes up with designs over there, probably the head tells the ship artist what kind of design or ship they want, the head ship artist concepts it and what not.
Everyone has an input I've heard. If someone here gets it maybe they'll like one of your designs in your portfolio.
Tho I bet ATM they're looking for more Romulan and Voth designs then anything.
-
Well, at least with one of the modders from this forum on board, the designs will be a little more creative and less generic than some of STO's current ships.
-
Yes good luck wiley.
you too phoenix... you are equally able to send the cv in... you have the skills too dude.
-
Sounds like a dream job but not ready to even think about a move from the UK just yet.
Good luck to those who do apply.
-
Any news yet boys?
-
Nothing yet, but I hear that Gabriel Koerner got a phone interview with a request: build a custom ship at 8k polies and a week to build it. I haven't heard anything since.

Only one thing for it then. Send them a custom boat that weighs in at 7k polies!
I would have thought that they would at least acknowledge the application of a man who has made so many great mods, has had his work featured on the covers of books AND is working on stuff for SOTL.
-
Not only that, but they asked Gabe, who has been in A LOT more things than I have. Plus, they might only be looking for someone who lives in California.
-
question wiley:
would you have done a "star trek old style" ship or a cryptic studios style one?
i ask only because maybe this other chap does those sort already and maybe thats what they want
(note: im not a fan of cryptic's ships style)
-
You have a point wiley, but does he have much experience in making meshes for video games? It's all well and good being able to make an uber high end mesh, but that does no good for cryptic, who need someone who can make meshes to fit inside a poly budget and make them look good.
As good as Gabes work is, I've never ever seen him do low poly stuff. Ever. *prepares to be proved wrong*.
-
Not to mention he knew jack about 3ds Max.

Good question. Since Star Trek Online takes place in the 25th Century, and the "old style" ships are there to simply please fans, I would create a visually-pleasing cryptic studios ship. It would most likely be a rebuild of the Argonaut, since I was thinking ST:O when designing it.
Plus I'm now doing SOTL. Which would you think is better? You already can play with the ships I have created (plus they look better than Cryptics).
-
when i said old style... i did not mean the ships that were just to please the fans lol my issue with the cryptic new style was the odd cut outs in the saucers etc... i likes some of the cryptic ships that were like oldstyle ships in the meaning of smooth hulls with out the cutouts.
-
I was inspired by the Regent when I built the Polaris. The trick is to balance new design with the old, or you will end up with a design that is out of place.

Not necessarily - the lead ship artist was shipped out from Texas (?) to California.
