Title: After Spocks funeral and before the Enterprise returned home...
Post by: 086gf on May 05, 2012, 08:28:58 PM
Here is something that I havn't really seen discussed around here.

We all know that the Enterprise not only brawled with another ship but also had repairs made aswell before the 3rd movie even started.

Are there any sources(official or otherwise) out there that give the details about any of this? How much time did pass between the two movies anyways? I've wondered about that for quite some time now. Also, what do you guys think happened inbetween TWOK and TSFS?

Well, I'm not entirely sure how stardates are converted to real dates, so if anyone can do so, that'd be helpful because Memory Alpha doesn't have a standard date for the events of Star Trek III.

TWOK: Stardate 8130.3, March 22, 2285.
TSFS: Stardate 8210.3, real date unknown.

according to http://trekguide.com/Stardates.htm

Stardate 8130.3 is on Mon May 25 2268 21:49:42 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
and
Stardate 8210.3 is on Fri Jun 05 2268 23:57:08 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)

Memory Alpha does have a year listed for TSFS in its Stardate article: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Stardate (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Stardate)
According to that it is also set in 2285 which, i think, makes more sense than 2268.

Well, I would assume TSFS takes place in the same year.  The Enterprise wasn't quite THAT badly damaged, after all. :P

Most of the story is covered in the very first scene on bridge, as far as I remember in TWOK Enterprise had auxiliary power restored with no shields and only few shots (that's why they went to the nebula - to even the odds).

Most likely Enterprise went to the Ceti Alpha V to pick up Reliant's crew then they went back to the Mutara sector, presumably there Scotty partially patched up outer hull (still had few spots without spare plating on it as seen in ST3 docking scene) and fully restored main power, Spocks funeral was conducted and they sailed away back to Earth.

Presumably somewhere en route to Earth Enterprise dropped survivors from the reliant and large part of trainee crew, might have been a rescue ship that could fly faster than damaged Enterprise or it might have been an outpost or another deep space station.

They probably would have salvaged stuff from the Regula Space station.

I think the main thing is that the Enterprise had more battle damage between the two movies.  The Reliant only shot up the port side of the secondary hull, yet she has two big patches on the starboard side as well.

Also, the gap was long enough for Saavik to be promoted and graduated.

damage can be explained quite easily ;) money money :P TWOK had to utilize footage from TMP due to budget, they also had to go cheap on decorations and props, ST 3 had much richer budget and for plot sake they had to show Enterprise in very bad condition in order to decomission the ship, with only three holes in it it would be silly but with over 10 huge holes in her + massive internal damage it was much more believeable.

That's fine Bones, IF the damage were the reason for decommissioning the Enterprise.  "Jim, the Enterprise is twenty years old!  We feel her day is over."

If massive damage were a good reason to scrap a starship, the the Enterprise-E should've been scrapped at the end of Nemesis.

Good point, but I like to think they had to make it a bit more dramatic, so the ship appeared really battered.

Some good points here. Its completely possible that they took the work bees that they had and any extra hull panels and did what they could themselves alone in deep space.

Indeed, also this would explain why it took so long to travel - remember Enterprise and Voyager could travel with minimal warp speed due to ammount of holes in hull structure ? might be even impossible to make it into warp with those holes in starboard side (even tho these were not present in TWOK)

The reason that the enterprise had more battle damage is to be read into books. When she went back to earth, she had a battle with klingon cruisers. Its all written in the books.

Although books aren't canon (Unless you want "The Return" to be considered so), why not Klingons? :P
