I don't know how many of you would be for this or not, but I'm stoked. Check out this campaign from Trekweb.com to nudge Paramount to let Bill Shatner restore STV to its original version. If you're interested, take a look. The address / phone number is supplied so you can let them know you want the film remastered with new effects.

No offense, but is this a joke? The only thing William Shatner is good for is ripping his shirt off, so any Director's Cut of his movie is bound to suck regardless. I'm almost tempted to completely fanfic rewrite Star Trek V now actually, to salvage what elements of a good plot there were. I might cut out the Klingons...

some of us actually like Ep five! it's funny. besides, I'd like to get the whole TMP set for DVD before they change the format permanently to Blue-ray and I have to buy all my movies all OVER again (AND a new TV). Mr. Nimoy got his versions of director's cut. why not let Ego boy have one last inflation? they're so far up there, now, in age, that they should have a last hurrah.
Farshot: write out Sybok, instead. I hear he's the main bone of contention in the movie, anyway.

Well...it's not like there is anything sacred about STV. I liked it and all, but it is cheese. Why not redo it?

Well, from what I can tell, the changes proposed require interaction between Kirk and dozens of rock men. That sounds like that scene will either be re-filmed more than 20 years later or have some really clever CGI thrown in, a huge undertaking either way.
Not to mention that William Shatner doesn't even look like Kirk now. ;)

If they wouldn't re-shoot something for Wrath of Kahn or First Contact, they definitely wont for Final Frontier.
-
From what I understand, I think they shot a lot of it. Enough to "fake it" with some clever CGI. It was dark on the planet after "god" makes his appearance so it shouldn't be too terribly noticeable.
-
yeah, that's what I heard, back then most of it would have been VFX anyway.
-
From Shatners own book he has stated that they filmed the scenes without the rockmen in hopes of putting something together in post production. But they has run out of money so they reused the God head from ealier to chase Kirk.

I'd love to see it for 3 reasons;
1. Scottys face when he realises he's beamed up a "rockman" not kirk.
2. Scottys face when he realises he's blown up his transporter
3. Kirk trying to bring down a bop with a hand phaser!
A thought just struck me.. Why not just do a complete redux using the JJ cast?
Simon and the Rockman sounds ace :funny

Beaming up rockmen? Sounds too Galaxy Quest-ish to me.
