Animated Comedy Series, Co-Created by the guy behind 'TNG Season 8' twitter account and book. He's also worked on 'Rick and Morty', and the upcoming Mudd Short Trek episode.

Some new info on Lower Decks.
[ur]https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-lower-decks-characters-mike-mcmahan[/url]
Some people might be happy to know that the characters won't be like Rick and Morty level of sillyness. The main characters are still Starfleet officers, they will be professional.
He tells Slash Film that there are some things from that show that you can't get away with when you're writing for the Star Trek universe. "A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters," McMahan says. "How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can't have a Morty in Star Trek. You can't just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they're very much ingrained in Star Trek."
On the use of comedy:
McMahan also had a message for fans worried that a comedy series doesn't fit into the Star Trek franchise. "Star Trek has always had comedy in it," he says. "Every series of Star Trek has funny characters, funny episodes, and those always live in the B-stories for the most part. That, to me, is what I love about Star Trek. So it's really taking that aspect of it and letting that shine. I can't wait for you guys to see it, because it's one of my favorite things I've ever made. It feels like it fell out of another dimension in the 90s where they were making a funny Next Generation era show."
There are character breakdowns in the article that I didn't quote here.
Also, it is a 'canon' show, for those who care about that kind of thing.

Lower Decks starts streaming August 6th in the US and Canada, no word on an International release yet

the ship for that show looks horrendously stupid ugly :funny :icon_lol:
that alone makes me def have no interest in this show unfortunately... :idk: :undecided:
-
I love it. But the focus of the show is the characters and stories, not the ship :/
-
The ship fits the role it was assigned. Not every ship is front line potential and it fits with some wolf359 ships.
-
Yeah the ship/crew are described as 'second contact', they show up after the Enterprises and Voyagers do their thing and move on.
The follow up team.

I might be weird, but I just have a hard time with an animated Trek series. I'm just not used to seeing Trek in an animated sitcom format.

Pretty much in the same boat (err, starship) as you there. While I enjoy watching animated films, and certain animated shows (Clone Wars, Rebels for example), I just have very little interest in animated Trek. I have a feeling this show will be as ridiculous as TAS was.

If you can find a Canadian VPN, here's a Lower Decks trailer

They're using TNG style stardates

First episode is out (in USA/Canada, International deals still pending), I liked it more than I thought I would.
-
I very much enjoyed it!
-
The season finale was great!
I never thought they'd canonize the Luna Class.
-
Gotta say, THAT'S how you make an entrance. This is the Riker to the rescue we should've got in ST: Picard...
Guns blazing, TNG theme roaring in the background!
-
Ditto to DT and T38
I'm still hoping I might get my Frakes-Sirtis sitcom. And of course animated would be perfect for them now.
I didn't enjoy writing of every episode but I LOVED the characters. My surprise love was Badgey :funny
-
im still trying to get past the first episode... im really trying...
-
There's no shame in skipping it, though you might miss some characterization.
-
i watched the last half of the season finale, that was pretty good...
if a series was to be on the Titan, i would be all in i think!
-
Oh Lower Decks is out in most of the rest of the world now on Amazon Prime.
-
Finished it a couple of days ago. Loved it. Best Trek we've had since The Orville. :P

I loved it this much:

I'm printing more of them and improving the model kit every time I do - I'll be setting up an Etsy page once a few kinks in my production flow are worked out.

very cool

Lower Decks Season 2: https://twitter.com/StarTrek/status/1379183230310490113
-
Also, it received early Season 3 renewal.
-
I'm guessing they were happy enough with Season 1.
Seasons 1 and 2 were ordered together, so the Season 3 renewal is technically the first renewal the show got.
-
Excellent. Loved series one. The best Trek since The Orville. :)

Interview with Mike McMahan.
This quote specifically
"The way I’m handling Riker is the stories we’re telling on the Titan are a part of Riker’s history. They might be a little bit of an exaggerated version of it through our show..."
So yeah, the events of the show are happening, but are exaggerated because of the style of show.
The security chief in Season 2 will be a species we've seen before, but one we've never seen in Starfleet before.
