Personally, I think it sucked. Wut do you think?
-
yeah. totally.

Considering it was created by 1960s technology and 1960s television budget, i'd say it was very well done given the limitations of the time. I don't however want to see the same design in Trek XI, with todays budgets and todays requirements on visual quality.

do you mean this phaser? if so, id say the design is clumsy and inefficient. there is only one grip... meaning you either have to touch the barrel as you discharge and loose a limb or youd have to balance in on your arm. theres also that kinda super soaker shovel handle at the end which makes me wonder if they have to pump it before shooting it.
-
the show was filmed in the 1960s lol
how high-tech would you expect the props/weapons to be??
-
...super high-tech :P

Exactly the way it was show. Low budget and quick made. Also, not super detailed because the limitations of the video technology did not require, nor he demand the attention to details we see now.

it is an interesting design, what about it made them think it looked futuristic i wonder..

Sorta reminds me of a nerf gun.

Looks uncomfortable to shoot. I think the power cells were exposed too lol. Looks like something from the old Lost in Space series which was being made at about the same time. It looks awsome and a good design, but it looks verry uncomfortable. It looks like somethng you would mount on the top of an assault vehicle.
-
It appears to be having all the ergonomics of a hand grenade covered in glue.

I'd love to see the corresponding vehicle, tho.

wouldnt that be the Galileo? or do you mean ground unit, cuz id love to see that too.
heres a video of the weapon for those who havent really seen it:

still, I'd take that thing overy any conventional weapon to date.
-
that rifle looks more like stun weapon or something even worse with that long pointy needle posing as a sort-of-barrel-thing, also if that handle has the trigger on it then it must be bloody uncomfortable to use it, there is no handle for second hand at all. It would be more comfortable if it would be used as a big gun with restraint belt like the one used in Aliens on smartguns - then it wouldn't require any handle :D
I say the best rifle ever was type3/compression phaser rifle (if I'm correct that's the one used in FC/INS/NEM tho in NEM there was too much chrome on it)
-
thats the EVA rifle.

This is about where tech is now-ish:

It's unfortunate that we'll lose our sense of style in the next several hundred years- cuz this thing really looks fairly badass. :arms:
-
looks like a toy
-
yeah, way too bulky n all that.
-
It's a support weapon, like a light machine gun. Notice the bipod?
-
Yeah, I noticed the bipod, still a bulky toy.
-
Well, that prototype is now more than five years old, so who knows what it looks like now. The point is, it looks a lot better than the TOS weapon, above- despite the phaser being how many hundred years older?

Lol. Kirk should use the BFG from DOOM. I bet he could make it look more macho than the Rock did. Bwahahahaha!
