Now THAT'S a trailer. I hate when moviemakers end up making trailers which essentially spoil most of the movie.

I hope it won't leave that mixed feeling at the end that everything was really good yet something failed completely in the middle of the movie (like Man of Steel did for me)

While I liked some aspects of the Emmerich Godzilla(namely the design of the monster and the action scenes), it was pretty hideous. What with the idiotic storyline, atomic breath-less Godzilla, and mr. "That's a lot of fish" Matthew Broderick.
THIS movie though looks freaking amazing! I just hope that the monster looks as good as it seems.

That trailer gives away plenty if you really look at it. Love the angle they're going with it though!

Now that the film has been out for a while, I'm going to give my thoughts on it. Please note, there will be spoilers.
I'm gonna get my cons out of the way first. Not enough Bryan Cranston and just BARELY enough Godzilla. There was enough Godzilla to carry the film, but, at least for me, just barely enough. His presence wasn't felt almost all the way through like in the original. And as much as I get Aaron Taylor Johnson's performance, there was something so manaically likeable about Cranston's character that made me want him to stick around and he didn't.
Now, my one bit of "controversy". A LOT of people didn't care for Johnson's soldier character, claiming him to be dull and emotionless. I don't get that. Prior to everything going to sh*t, he was a loving husband and father, and a worried son. But once monsters attacked, he switched off...which is what a soldier is trained to do in an emergency situation. There were monsters out there that needed killing, he couldn't afford to go into a deep depression, so he took those feelings and compartmentalized them. Likely after the events in San Francisco, he probably had to depend on his wife to see him through a few rough patches after everything caught up with him.
And finally, my pros. I absolutely love the buildup in this movie. They show just enough of Godzilla in the opening to get you ready, then slowly build up towards his appearance in Hawaii, but hold off on full on monster brawling until later. Now, a lot of people got irritated with what they felt should have been an epic fight that was instead condensed and shown on the news. If you pay attention, there wasn't that much of a fight. Godzilla attacked and the winged MUTO flew off like a pansy cause it was no match for Godzilla alone. I loved the new kaiju as well. Both MUTOs were very neat looking once I saw them in the film(the toys were miscolored and just plain bad looking). The military had the usual idiot plan. "Hey, let's try blowing up three creatures that feed on radiation with a nuke!" The final fight between Godzilla and the MUTOs in San Francisco was spectacular, especially Godzilla's atomic breath.
All in all, a great film and a superior one to the 1998 attempt.

I loved the Spielbergyness of it all. Problem is classic Spielbergianism was heavy on the power of the visuals, often revolutionary. In this modern age of rampant CGI, it can come across as cliche or plagiaristic. But the experience was really awesome because I saw it in 3d IMAX, and it certainly was a movie deserving of that treatment.

Honestly, in this age of CGI everywhere, I'm GLAD that they chose not to fill every frame of the movie with it.

I think the experience of the IMAX speakers also helped a lot. The rawrs were amazing and the buildup to the atomic breath was also amazing. Godzilla has been my favorite movie of the year.
