Presenting JL Studios U.S.S. Enterprise D Enhancements.
The one and only way improve upon DJ's fantastic Galaxy Class, We at JLS thought have made bump map effects for. Thats the one thing it missed... bump mapping. Of course this was not DJ's fault as the BC engine does not support it. So we have simulated the effect and the results look great.
I've also made some adjustments to the bussard collectors, the nacelle grilles, escape pods, the deflector and darkened the hull slighty. Brand new speculars also complement the new bump effect and the overall look of the ship.
There are two versions of the bump effect, medium and light. One must take your fancy :P
In addition to this I will include the already fixed Tactical Display Problem along with the sfx problem which some of you have been experiencing.
Release Date: Summer/Autumn 2008

As I stated before; very VERY nice:)
-
Wow Jb, that is freakin' awesome. Will you also be fixing the display that shows the system damage?
-
whoa... that looks superb!
-
This was the only slight disapointment of mine with this cool ship, the textures were great, but didn't quite match the look of the later season model on TNG. Now she will be Perfect :D
Great Job.
-
There are two reasons why my Galaxy has no fake bump mapping.
1. It only looks good from certain angles. From most angles, everything looks backwards.
2. The ship is built for Excalibur, and will have real normal mapping to add bumps that will look correct from every angle. Had I fake bump mapped it, those real ones wouldn't look right come Excalibur.
-
mh, looks good enough, I guess. I have to say, however, I never was a fan of fake bump-mapping...I'll be waiting for the Excal version ;-)
-
While they look really neat, DJ's correct where the angles are concerned... we touched base on this regarding a Nebula some time ago; fake bumps just don't work all that well. A sad fact. But I suppose that wouldn't really bother some people, so I wish ya the best of luck with this project.

^^Agreed.

Looks great man, thanks for taking the time to do it..

Well you can be wrong there. Most people when trying to bump map... leave the shading light on one side and a dark shadow on the other. This is not the case here which means the rised part of the hull is even anyway you look.
Besides from all the pics I taken, there all at different angles and the bump mapping works.

Thats the only point in this... its specifically BC. If it went to legacy it would look stupid as that does allow bump maps.
Looks great man, thanks for taking the time to do it..
Only taken about 20 mins to do, not a problem.

I for one prefer the look of DJs Galaxy Class without the "easy bake oven" texturing, most notably visible on P81's models. While i'm not saying your "enhancement" of DJs textures are bad, it's just not my cup of tea.

Thats fine, I'm not out to please everyone as i'd be here for a very long time ;) Im just opposite to you, i think this gives DJ galaxy more depth than the original flat textures, no offence to DJ. You either like it or not :D

I agree with you jb. The simulated bump mapping looks great... and great job on this. It does give the ship more depth, and with the light bump mapping, it is more subtle and elegant. I "kicks the ship up a notch".
I very much look forward to the real bump mapping of this and all ships in Excalibur, but even if it's not visible from all angles; this still looks real good for BC
-
I prefer the light bumps, myself. Not too much, not too little.
-
So I think the Galaxy Class From DJ Curtis just as it is perfect....I do not know why so many people are complaining about the Ship :(....I think it's too early to now change...is my opinion.....
in any event include the galaxy and the venture to my favorite ships

Like I said, it does look neat; I'll surely download it once I'm settled and my PC is back up and running. I do admit, a lot of the details are really accented, and you all know me... I loves detail! :D So I'll wait to pass my final judgement for when I've tested it out.

No one here is complaining. All this is is making an already beautiful ship look more realistic. ;)
-
well I def like how the ship looks with these new texture tweaks on some angles.

Meh it's been done to each and every popular ship...There even was a mod for how a certain galaxy class looked in one particular episode (and I'm not talking about battle damage, here). So, in other words, this kind of mod is certainly not 'new' but still it is a viable as any other mod.

Also, different people have different ideas of what looks good. I can see why someone wouldn't like fake bump mapping, it can look a little cheap sometimes, but I think this is done well.
-
It certainly is :) Just not my cup of tea anymore ;) In any case keep on churning out good stuff, folks :)
-
Well, in any case, it looks damn awesome from the right angles. Heh heh, nice work, jb.
-
BUMP :P
I was messing around with this again after the little argument concerning DJ's Galaxy on the potd afew days ago. Anyways im going to scrap 2 versions of the fake bump mapping & just go with the little less bumpy one :P
Ive also completely redone the nacelles grilles, impulse engines, bussards & the main deflector.
Enjoy

-
I like it, will this overwrite or install separately?
-
I never make mods to overwrite someone elses work unless its mine ;) So to answer your question separate :)
~Jb06
-
Super duper! Looking forward to this.
-
Indeed, you're the man!
-
thirded.
are those pics the ones with more or less bump??
-
The only variant now.

This does look better than the one at the beginning of the thread. And I'm convinced that you've changed the colour of the deflector dish slightly. Looks paler. Or is it me?
Still, good idea.
-

-
ouch, reading more careful doesnt hurt
lol
-
It looks great! Even though indeed as DJ said the bump-mapping may play up under certain angles.
-
That deflector is helluh nice...
-

It all depends if you get it right when creating the bump maps. Some results look crap, others look fine at any angle.
I finally got around to converting the Venture just for Jimmy :P so here's the results.

Very nice! :)

Beautiful.

Oh god, I've got to get this!
Sorry about the reading thing. I sort of only look at the important stuff. But hey, a recolour that doesn't look like an upside down baboon.
Again, can't wait to get this.
-

tsk tsk - dont be lazy now :P

How do you know whats important and whats not unless you read it?
-
Great job.
Looks more subtle and elegant.
-
I wish this could be done for the Nebula and Ambassador Class
-
Well, this thread was named something like "BUMP mapping DJ Galaxy class" and so, it would lead me to read bits with the word bump in. When you're relaxing by doing nothing, you just sort of shut down slightly. :D
But still, I can't wait to get this.
-
Right again i got bored so i decided to dig this out again, but this time ive completely retextured the Galaxy, not just edited parts like it was originally. Ive still got bits to finish off, including underneath the saucer which still needs doing, but other than that its done.
~Jb06
-
very nice! :)
-
Ohh, very pretty indeed...
-
Niice, however I noticed you have about four of the rear bridge lights on, considering this is the observation lounge I'd think you'd need to have them all on :P. Just a bit of constructive criticism :). Other than that, this is looking sexy.
-
i like it, very nice. its alot crisper and more defined.
-
Cool.
I think you should merge this project with DJ's upcoming Galaxy Pack. (just a thought)
-

I wouldn't. I don't know why but it just seems a bit wrong. NO offense.
But yeah, she's loooking fantastic! Bring it on!
-
dalek, I agree, they are two different wips

Thats it!
For the actual Galaxy, she looks nice. She has a more DS9 feel to it now which I think works well. Congrats!

Done ;)

Sweet
-
gorgeous
-
Veeeeerrrrrra nice! I find the yellow windows give it a touch more DS9, something I like.
-
Very Nice. You could throw USS Challenger (NCC-71099) on it and release it as part of the Delta Quadrant Pack as Geordi's ship from Timeless.
-
very nice work mate... like allot ;)
-
Maybe we could have expected the old D to look something like this if it had survived Veridian III.
-
Ok for a few days we've been messing around with the bump situation. The way ive been doing it originally was using the bevel effect... but last night i decided to actually use the bump map effect which is in photoshop. Once that was done limey applied it to th model then "burned" it to a texture... This however didnt really work, so i used the bump maps & applied them to the normal texture. If you dont understand it, thats fine, as long as i do. :P
Anyways i think the bumps look a hell of a lot better, probably more like you sorta get in a game which supports bump mapping.
Here's the pics

Holy... Hell... Cookies.
-
I agree, that looks much better (and I'm glad I understood all of that :D.)
-
I can't wait for tihis to be released. Looks like the real thing, strate out of the movies.
-
Excellent job! This looks awesome.
Will these enhancements be released by themselves or will they be part of a pack?
I hope they will be just stand-alone. :)
-
Well for now i've only done the Enterprise, if i have time i'll do the Venture, but that will be it. I may supply blanks, depends on what people want.
~Jb06
-
JB that looks fab!!! I've even got one of the pics as my desktop :D Blanks are always good to include.
-
Thanks Luke, Yeah ill put the blanks separately. I think this new way of bump mapping will certainly enhance a lot of visual aspects of the game... no more bevel effects. :D
DJ did give permission for this to be released after summer, just to let the original find its feet on bcf, so me thinks you can all get ready for this. Ill need to re hp it because it was waaay too strong.
Glad you all like it
~Jb06
-
man that galaxy looks beautiful, so elegant, looking foward to seeing more,
-
Thanks for the response dude. Yeah, if you can squeeze in the Venture... that would be fantastic!
Cookie incoming.
Cheers
-
Hey JB, dunno if you've noticed but there's no escape pods on it (unless i've missed something you said earlier). It should look like this shot from Generations.
-
Thats the Generations Enterprise with refited escape pods. The Season 4-7 Enterprise which this is based on has pods similar colour to the hull, as ive done ;)

Yes you're right. But I have spotted something else.
I got this screencap from S6 Birthright. The hull colour looks different here but I don't know if it's just the lighting you've used in the system. But by the looks of it, it doesn't have the red on the outside of the registry and those yellow bits below the registry are longer and thinner ;) But I don't know how canon you're going for.
