Title: Betalgeuse betalgeuse betalgeuse!!!
Post by: Furyofaseraph on November 27, 2008, 12:02:42 AM
Hey guys,

A lot of you may not know me, but I am a modeller over at the SFC forums. I am a fan of the TMP era, with the maroon uniforms and the bad "KHAAAAN" lines. I am also very liberal with my Trek. I believe in a salad-bar mentality when it comes to trek: take what you want and leave the rest. I have, over the last few years, created my own version of trek lore.
In my own trek canon, the federation isn't a solid nation, its actually closer to NATO. They all share military partnership, but are distinct nations. Because of that there are vast amounts of ship design ideas available for the taking. Suppose that the typical starfleet ships we see are just those of the Earth fleet contributing to the NATO joint operations. Suppose andorians, tellarite, and vulcan ships fly by their side. With dozens of members you could get some great ideas giong.
I mention this because I wish to show you guys something that Atolm and I have hammered out in the last day. He came up with the design and the basic rough model. I refined the model and gave it details and I will be texturing it. It belongs to a species called the Betalgeusians. They were featured in the Motion Picture. They are the wierd blue guys with a sort of beak-like nose. Take a look at the Memory Alpha article if you don't know who I'm talking about.

Anyways, on to the model

More to come soon.

Cool, I look forward to the updates.

I like it.

It could almost work in the SGA universe too. For SGA, add another sail (facing opposite orientation of the one on the nose) and a matching lower in place of the nacelles, with some type of grilles on the side for propulsion. The nacelles don't really fit SGA, obviously.

a fascinating design. i look forward to seeing it textured, and i wonder what sort of armament it will have

Very interesting design! Any idea on her defensive capabilities? :]

I like it. :D  And the fact that those circle like pieces at the end's of the wings are different.

Certainly is an interesting design.
Kinda reminds me of an upsidedown Crossbow.

Thank you all.
I had thought that this might've been a bit too exotic for the trek universe. Starforce: I'm not really a fan of the Stargate Universe anymore, I stopped watching it when Ford went steroid crazy.
As far as armament, she uses the standard federation phasers, a couple of photorps, and something called the Photon Lance. If phasers are a narrowed and refined evolution of the laser (with distruptors just being a notch below them) the photon lance is the opposite. It's an extension of the laser, but it just dumps raw power into its emitter and lets the nadions fly.
Defensivesly, it has the typical shield and point-defense-phaser suite you see on federation ships. Nothing really all that exciting except the photon lance.
Btw, The disks on the ends of the wings. You'll notice that there are two different bulbs. The one on the port side is the bridge :). The one on the starboard is a kind of temple/observational dome. Also the little thingy on the port wing is a captains cutter or yacht.

Unwrapping is complete, and texturing has began.

The teal parts will become more complex as I work this guy.

Not said anything but I've been watching this for a while and I can tell you, only one word can describe the sheer beauty of this ship....
Supercalifragilistic- oh sod it.... Great!

It's not often you see a ship that takes such a view on asthetics, looks almost Gothic (Although the textures may change that a tad.)
Lookin' good so far Fury and I like the comparison between NATO and the Federation; I've often thought the same (Why don't we see Vulcan/Andorian/Bolian ships after the Federation forms?)
Good luck, hope you don't run into any problems, 'cause I can't wait!

Thanks, Magna. I hadn't thought it gothic, really. Honestly, the one designer that jumps out at me is Doug Chiang - at least some of his more exotic stuff, but then I didn't design it, all I did was refine the model and texture :-)

Speaking of which: Testing out some lightmaps

One of the most original designs I have seen in quite awhile.  Love the Idea and concept behind it as well.

Looks outstanding.  Keep up the good work.  :D

Sorry guys, no updates till tomorrow. It turns out I got distracted by something pretty. Someone has come up with a way to create a procedural voxel nebula.

 That's a fine ship there!

Is it me, or does it look like it could be carved in stone? I think so... and I think it looks great!
Hope you get it finished soon, 'cause I wanna blow up some Cardies with it!

AT LAST IT IS DONE!

All color maps have been completed. (bump, spec, and illum maps are easy to make).

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the J'Va-class Star Crusier.
She's around 380 meters long, and pretty well armed for a heavy cruiser.

I have decided on the name J'Va to honour a good friend of mine who passed away about 3 weeks ago. He would've liked this design, for what little he was into Star Trek anymore.

In universe it was named after the first Betelgeusian to make it into space from their homeworld. She's armed with 8 phaser1s and 4 phasers3 (sfb's primary and defensive phasers, respectively). She's got 2 photorps, and the one photon lance. You'll notice that there aren't any weapon ports for the photon cannon. See, there are very powerful force-field generators along the front of the "horn" (they also serve as the deflector when in warp, in a much lower power setting) that gather the needed particles in front of the ship, and then tears the field open when it fires. (think like the Yamato cannon in Starcraft 1).

Woah - old, dead topic... Just thought I'd mention that this ship is up for download at my site (in SFC format, not BC). Starforce has a copy of it - so he may end up porting it over.

The front reminds me of Colonial One  :P... Awesome work though, an intriguing, interesting, brand spanking new design.

Have a cookie.

Wow.  I missed this during my sabbatical.  Neat thoughts on the Trek universe canon.  Dead wrong, but neat nonetheless.  :)

Anyway, I like this ship design!  Very elegant and organic.  I reminds me of Prince's symbol.  That, and BSG's Colonial One (the bow, obviously).

I'm sorry - Dead Wrong?

EDIT: I apologize - I jumped the gun.

I very much take the attitude of "Salad Bar" when it comes to trek - take what you want and leave the rest. My little Trek universe started off as a way to find a middle-ground between Starfleet Battles and Canon trek. I've since expanded on it. I know its not canon - but It's the way I prefer things. Consider it like this: there's the Roddenverse, the Abramsverse, and now the FoaSverse.

Don't hit me, but I quite enjoy the Abramsverse and the FoaSverse more. :S

...

And a little alternate universe version of ships that I really should get back onto. Anyway! Another cookie from me bud, she's beautiful! A real work of practical art.

Oh, I have no problem with people making their own canon.  It's when they try to justify blatantly uncanon things as being part of the canon that I get annoyed.

As long as they distinguish their 'verse from the canon one, it's all good, baby! :P
