Title: General Star Trek merchandise
Post by: Shadowknight1 on June 05, 2009, 01:56:24 PM
I didn't see a thread for this, so I'll start one, this is for Trek merchandise outside of Star Trek XI(unless the mods want to merge the two).  I'll start this off with the Star Trek Hot Wheels, and my recommendations for them.  The first "wave" consists of three classic ships, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Refit from TMP, the NCC-1701-D, and the USS Reliant, with the promise of other ships coming soon.  The other ships(one of which is now released) are the USS Enterprise(nu-Trek), the Narada, and the Klingon Bird of Prey(which is released).  I do not have any of the ones from the first wave for reasons I shall outline shortly, and I do have the Bird of Prey which I shall review after the "preview" of the first three.

The first three are of varying quality as far as accuracy goes and they go in this order from worst to best: TMP Enterprise, Enterprise-D, and Reliant.  The TMP Enterprise just has far too much wrong with it detail wise.  The upper saucer now has an aft firing phaser bank that wasn't there before and the banks aren't even painted.  The NCC-1701 is too far forward on the saucer from the USS Enterprise, and there are several bits of misc details that aren't painted on.  While bigger than the Johnny Lightning 1701, I would recommend that one over the Hot Wheels one.  The quality of the ship was a deal breaker on that.

The Enterprise D fared better.  Not only does it have more show-accurate colors, it also has the advantage of having saucer separation.  It looks accurate to the show.  Unfortunately, I'm not that big a fan of the Ent-D and therefore didn't buy one, but if you like the Ent-D, this is a fairly good replica to buy.

The Reliant looks like the best of the bunch.  All the things they did wrong on the 1701, they did right on the Reliant.  It looks very movie accurate and well built.  The only reason I didn't buy it is that I already have a Johnny Lightning Reliant, but I may get it at some point anyways.

Now, for the one I actually have.  The Klingon Bird-of-Prey.  This ship has been rendered in so many different toys, all with varying grades of awesomeness, but this beats them all.  Despite having plastic wings instead of die-cast like the rest of the ship, it's made that way for a reason.  The one thing that pretty much every non-model version of the BOP doesn't have is the moving wings.  Though one of the "Action Fleet" ships had the wings move, it wasn't quite right.  The Hot Wheels BOP has wings that move into the EXACT positions from the first movies.  It arrives in box with the wings folded up into "landing mode".  I expected them to fold down and lock into attack mode, but it surprised me by stopping halfway down in the "flight mode"!  From there, of course, it went into battle mode.  This is a really cool touch and it makes me very glad I bought the ship.  The paint job is well done and very Klingon, and the engine is done in a translucent red.  The stand is also a nice touch.  It has a black base with a translucent red upper part and is shaped in the Star Trek delta and on one side the stand has the Klingon emblem.  The stand has a ball-socket so that the ship can be posed.  I highly suggest this ship, it is just plain awesome. 8)

I will have reviews on the Nu-Trek Enterprise and Narada in the Trek XI merchandise thread once I have them in hand, but hopefully they're good. :)

To put it simply: Art Asylum FTW for big ships!

So, for great detail but in a small size, either the Micro Machine ships (if they are still around somewhere) or the Johnny Lightning ships.

Thats all I needed to know.

*starts scouring ebay*

Precisely.  The Hot Wheels ships are actually bigger than the Johnny Lightning ships.  And as I said, the 1701 is the worst of the bunch, which makes me sad.  I would've liked one, but just too many inaccuracies.  But the Bird-of-Prey is well worth the money.

They really need to bring back the Micro Machines line in the US. I loved those ships.

I still have the 1701-A and a Type-6 somewhere! I cut up my Vor'cha as a kid because I wanted it to separate like the Big D.

I was in I think second or third grade? I was really into things coming apart, and DIY paintjobs using whiteout and pen. Man, I really regret doing that to the poor 1701-A. I should try dig it up as well as the constellation and D'Deridex to show off. :P

Heck, both my Enterprise-B and Excelsior were saucer separable.  But every Micro Machines Reliant and 1701-A that I got lost their warp engines.  Every.  Single.  TIME. :(

As for the BOP pics, here we go!  The first two are of the BOP in landing mode, one from behind to show the translucent red engine.  The third pic is flight mode.  The fourth is in battle mode.  The fifth pic is a forced perspective shot of my JL 1701 and the BOP that turned out kinda mehhh, but oh well.  Sixth pic is the BOP alongside my Konami K'Tinga battlecruiser.  Seventh and eighth pics are of the K'tinga as well, because I knew someone would ask.  Click the thumbnails to bigify!

That looks like the recently released Hot Wheels BOP. I still can't find that one, and the JJ-Enterprise. I guess it was released very recently.

LOL, that's exactly what it is Wiley, I reviewed it in the opening post of the thread.  I had to get mine off eBay.  And the JJ-Prise has yet to be released, along with the Narada, but those should be coming sometime this month.  Can't wait to peg my sister in the back of the head with the Romula-borg pinecone. [DISCLAIMER: Shadowknight1 does not condone sibling violence.  He does, however, find it hilarious.]

Silver does condone violence, but I don't want Little Sister on my Narada.  I have my big ol' toy Vor'cha for that

My ongoing rivalry with my starkly astounding younger sibling aside, I do understand having to get things off E-Bay.  None of the stores here in Walla Walla (and I mean NONE) pack anything new.  So knowing my luck, it'll be Christmas by the time I see any of 'em here.

Furuta are pretty good for the more obscure ships, but the mainstream ones, I'll go with the Konami ships.  And is that the old Playmates Voyager I see?

Yes Dalek, they are, which makes me wish and hope that Paramount will allow them to do a version of the new movie Enterprise.

But the dark Voyager (Revell) is my pride hehe.

Well, here is a bunch of toys from some different Trek shows.

http://trekmovie.com/2009/06/19/the-collective-dst-toys-fall-update/

A review of the new 17" Enterprise D's(normal and AGT version) with HD pics and a clip of the AGT E-D in action.

http://trekmovie.com/2009/06/21/the-collective-reviews-of-diamond-select-enterprise-d-toys/

And here is some "ship porn" aka Ships Of The Line 2010. The 1701 refit in drydock with the starbase being built is pretty neat.(notice the Miranda towing a chunk of the top of the starbase, a Miranda in and another connie in a drydock).

http://trekmovie.com/2009/06/22/more-ships-of-the-line-calendar-images/

Speaking of SOTL is there a website that has all of the images in HD from all the previous years?

I also got the NCC1701, the A & D.

AMT I believe or something lol.

I'd get that Enterprise-D if I had the money, the space, and didn't have an innate hatred for the gray goose-egg.  No offense to those who do like it, and this is the best toy of it I've ever seen, but I just don't like it.  It has no grace, no elegance.  Heck, the "Turkey-Prise" design of the Ent-E was better looking.  And would make an awesome model, now that I think about it.

Well I chose AMT because you get 3 enterprises, and with the other box with it, you have all the Enterprises.
But they are not detailed so that's a bit lame.

Bandai is still the best I think..

Anyone else here like trains? Its a HO scale TOS train set that gets sent to you in a minimum of 3 issues(max of 6) over the course of many months(default 6 weeks inbetween) that costs $70 each.

The three basic issues:
Diesel locomotive featuring the USS Enterprise and lights
Coordinating engine with the crew of the Enterprise featured on the sides. This issue includes a free HO track set.
Passenger car that lights featuring James T. Kirk. This issue includes a free power pack that runs the train on the track.  [with three issues you have all you need for a basic train set]
Optional issues:
Lighted passenger car featuring Mr. Spock (includes free tracks to expand the railroad).
Lighted passenger car featuring famous Federation and enemy Star Trek spaceships (includes a free "splitter" track piece).
Lighted passenger featuring various TOS aliens (includes a free "splitter" track piece).

Was it worth it?

I have yet to see the remastered episodes, maybe because they never aired in Britain to the best of my knowledge, but I love watching the original versions of the TOS episodes whenever re-runs are aired. (No room + hardly any money = no Star Trek DVDs besides the 10 Star Trek movies).

I've owned the new Diamond Select Toys Enterprise-D for over a week and it is awesome. It is the same size as the model kit and it has molded on aztec hull plating. The saucer seperation is very nice since it uses strong magnets to strengthen the connection (they are somewhere inside the ship and never shown on the outside-- very nice). All of the lights are LEDs and can stay on with the click of a button. When seperated, both components can be individually lit. This is an awesome replica and I recommend everyone to buy it. :)

I'm considering getting one of these.  Then again, I had the same idea for my AMT model.  I was going to make it so that it can seperate using magnets, and both saucer and stardrive would light up independently.  my only problem is how I was gonna integrate the two together (The saucer would be powered by a magnetic reed switch, much like the prop Tricorders work).

Oh, and Wiley, is it raised detail like on the AMT kit?  Or is it like the actual 4' model?

I'm gonna be getting my hands on that SDCC Space Dock Enterprise...mainly cause I can say the inaccuracies in the mold and paint are because it's not finished yet.  :P

EDIT: My local Hastings(Video, Game, Book store for those of you across the pond or anywhere that doesn't have them) has the All Good Things Enterprise-D! O.O

EDIT2: I just received my Space Dock Enterprise.  I'm definitely happy with the money I paid, it's a pretty neat concept.  However, the inaccuracies are still there and I'm somewhat disappointed with the fact that the body of the secondary hull is the only die-cast part of the ship and the connecting dorsal appears to be rubbery rather than solid plastic.  Somewhat odd considering that the Klingon Bird-of-Prey was more die-cast than plastic.  While it is pretty good, it does make me feel a bit uneasy about how the quality of the new movie Enterprise will be...   Pics will be up when I have a chance!
