Title: Vladko1's WIPs, JJ Yorktown Refit and JJ Proxima
Post by: Vladko1 on July 10, 2010, 05:43:51 AM
Time to make my own thread, not making up 100 others :D
Except texturing Licard's vessel, I started to work and on this :P For now is only low poly saucer. After the basic of the model is fullt completed, I'll make it as high detail I can, using as low amount of polies as I can make. Here renders for now :P
please, give ideas and advices ;)

Well It would help if we knew a few things like:

What Era?

What kind of role will it have?

How big is it?

if this really is the Yorktown class revived, don't overload it with phasers this time :P

have you decided what era your refitting it to?  'cause I suddenly got the notion that it should be bumped to TMP.

Ill make 3 ships. ENT (not refited), TOS and TMP :P If you like I can make and 4th TNG refit with phaser arcs and new TNG hull :P

I think you've got the bussards too far in.  i notice the neck is the same size as wiley's Kelvinprise.  that makes it fit right in.

Yup, Ive watched while modeling from Willey's JJships, because they are really awesome and true JJ models :P I hope Willey wouldn't have anything for this ;)

we'll see with that one.  since I can't fly the ships with the keyboard, I tacked on a single 2 shot torp tube to the kelvin and kelvinprise (using Photonics) for my own use.

I'm making and one studio model, for a fan movie project, that will be filmed in a period of about 2 years. The scenario is 50% ready. After several years, expect the movie uploaded somewhere in someone's star trek forum :funny
btw, sorry for the PNGs, I made them for another Bulgarian forum :P

Vlad do you have a storyline?
Title: Re: Vladko1's WIPs, JJ Yorktown Refit
Post by: WileyCoyote on July 10, 2010, 06:04:20 PM
The paneling looks nice, but it looks a little too beveled. It needs to be more subtle. Is this a Kelvin-styled ship for a JJ-Enterprise styled variant? If it is a JJprise styled version, it needs to be considerably streamlined. I really like the side view. I also think the nacelles should be moved closer together.

might as well crank that STS on out...they're now officially retired.  if they haven't ended the program yet, they're about to.  America has got out of the space race 'cause it costs too much (and the shuttles are basically 76's)

did you use refrences for the top of the shuttle's personal rocket cluster?  i think it's the wrong shape.

The textures on the fuel pod need to be darker, but I think thats the only problem I can see texture wise. As for the shape of the fuel pod itself, I dont think there was a booster engine on it IIRC. That aside, it looks great!

Thanks guys. The interesting thing is that this shuttle is using only 4 64x64 textures :D

Work over the JJ Proxima - reestablished! Still much work to do. Ship's lenght - 760 meters (JJ Yorktown - 520 meters). The big windows on both of the ships create the feeling in you that you are on moving starbase! Still much more windows i have to make. Only 1/3 of the saucer's windows are made. The aft deflectors are transformed into shuttlebays! Screenshots below!

Everything is from the model. All of the textures are just several 128x128. There is no high resolution aztec with polar coordinates. I tried and it looks bad. When i have time I'll carry on with the windows, phasers and torpedoes. After that, I'll check for some fixes and maybe i will import the ship to BC. (I hate HPing, but Milen retired a month ago and only i know how the Proxima fights) :P
EDIT:
Expect the escape pods, registries and etc in 3D, not on mapped textures. That's why there is a chance for creating too detailed ship and the converting programs may crash.

Side windows at the middle of the saucer are done.

Keep in mind that extra details such as bump mapping and modeled hull plating are not necessary for BC. If it is for your own personal renders, go right ahead. The hull plating itself looks too much like brick or shingles to a roof. Subtlety is key for the ship's exterior appearance.

I'd suggest toning down the hull paneling (quite a bit), and make use of the specular maps to generate a similar effect. Also, bumpmapping isn't required, since BC doesn't support it.

I'll see what I'll do. For now im making the ship for rendering inside 3ds max. If it's not to heavy enough, after that i'll start to make new materials and etc before exporting ;)
EDIT: Infact, the ship without the lightning is very ugly.

The ship is exported to NIF. 67 998 polies. I've exported with NifSkope and everything of the directories of the NIF is as it must be, but in MPE there are no mapping coordinates :X Please, can someone help me?

Dude, the poly cot is way too high, use textures instead of the model.

In MPE the Yorktown is visualised correctly. The end of the next week i will start to hardpoint the ship and in the meanwhile i'll try if the proxima is well rendered in game. If so you can expect two very high detail JJ ships for the New Year :)
The Yorktown is around 540 meters long and the Proxima is about 850 meters (don't judge by the size of the windows. I wanted to recreate some kind of starbase feeling!)

I've tested and the jj proxima, but the ship has some displaying issues. I have to make some magic tricks to detach any part and then I think the ship will work. It is normal to have issues like these. It is around 90 000 polies (around 3,2MB nif).

Holy hell!!! And (to be frank), it doesn't even look that good. Model would look alot better with LESS polies, and a more subtle "hull paneling" pattern.

Look at WC's Galaxy model... At a "fraction" of the total polycount you are using, he has achieved a model that looks (in my opinion), far superior. Consider remodelling from scratch, at a considerably lower polycount. You'll see, the results will be alot better.

I've modeled these ships to use mesh except of textures. My first intetions were not to be used in Bridge Commander, and that is why they will not be released(not quite sure) + the thing that nobody likes them. They will remain only for rendering and training purposes.

If these ships are never intended for release in Bridge Commander, should this topic not be moved to the "Art" section, and not specifically "BC Modding" ? Just curious...
