Ok so I finished installing the latest version of Star Trek: Bridge Commander on my PC which uses Windows 7 and I get this Error on Startup which says:
D3D Render Creation Error
Error string from Renderer was:
"Creation failed: Set Display Mode failed"
I've played BC befor one my old PC which ran Windows Vista and BC work fine and I was hoping someone on the Forum could assist me in fixing this problem?

what folder did you install BC in?
on WIN 7 machines you should install it outside the programfiles folder to a place like C:/Games.
-
Picard-Alpha-Tango - go into your BC folder and delete your options.cfg file and you will be fine. Also listen to Nebula's advice on the install location - Windows 7 does not like having BC in the Program Files folder for some reason - use C:\Users\Public\Games.

Thanks for your guy's help on this I am installing the Game into the C:/Games Directory and hopefully that will work. I'll edit this post as I go along :)
EDIT 1: Starting the game after fresh install to the aformentioned directory ANNNDDD. . .got the same Error again. I'll see if I can't find the Options.cfg file.
EDIT 2: After uninstalling and reinstalling the Game into a folder in the Games file this should work.
EDIT 3: Ok so I assume that the Options.cfg file will be in the same Directory as stbc isu file right? or is it somewhere else?
EDIT 4: Ok I am in the BC directory which has the following:
5 file folders named data, Extras, saves, scripts and sfx
2 .dll files named binkw32 and Mss32
2 .txt files named masterserver and readme
The stbc application file
The STBC Icon image
1 .DAT file named textures.dat
and 1 .ISU file named stbc
if this is the right directory then there is no options.cfg.
EDIT 5: I'll see if CySn1d3's advice will work and will move my BC gamefiles onto my deskop and see if then my options.cfg will auto generate.
EDIT 6: still no luck... I'll try my luck by Directly installing the game files to the desktop

Options.cfg is in your BC directory - in your case it's most likely C:\Games\Activision\Bridge Commander or something similar.
-
try creating a folder DIRECTLY on the desktop and installing to THAT folder instead, thats what i had to do with my acer that had vista on it, as well as the machine im currently "borrowing" from my roommate, wich is vista as well.
TBH, thats the ONLY way ive been able to make an install that contains a options.cfg file. plain and simple in ANY other directory (including games)

The options.cfg file should be automatically generated the first time you load the game, even if the D3D error pops up.
Tell me, did you use the disk itself to install BC?

*offtopic convo and posts cleared*
guys please stay ontopic...
this patron is asking for specific help, not opinions about what OS is better...
and yes - installing directly from the disc does matter and that will be the end of that convo right there... anyone suggesting anything otherwise from here on out (in this thread or any other thread) will be violating forum rules and will get a week ban from this site...
now please continue in this thread ontopic...
thx :)

Yea and its still in my computer. also I get an C++ Abnormal Termination messagebox after that D3D Error pops up

have you installed BC's patch or any mods? is this a brand new untouched install?
have you rebooted your computer or installed any new drivers for your gfx cards? (these are questions asked before to people having the same problem as you)...
-
What are your hardware acceleration settings?

Yes this install is brand new and I do not have any mods installed and my BC is Version 1.1. Also I have rebooted my computer and it still gives me a D3D error message. I do not believe I have installed any new drivers for my ATI HD 4200 graphics card.
-
What are your hardware acceleration settings?
Not sure, how do I find that out?
-
you wouldfind that outby going into the ATI controll panel program which is located in controll panel(easier to find on classic view)
-
cant you find that by running the DXDiag also?
-
not always as some details in the ATI and NVidia control panels are hidden from the DXDiag program.
-
Hey, this used to happen on my old pc and i just restarted the pc and it went just fine i think that when you shut down the pc, like when you cut power directly on the plug it seems to bug the game at least that's what happened to me and as you are in an Win 7 it makes ore distant because te pc was an windows xp SP2.
-
I get the 3D Creation error some, See I use hot keys [not icons] and If I accidently press the key combination twice , it starts two instances of the game and Overloads computert memory, and the error pops up.
-
Please try this options.cfg:
http://defiant.homedns.org/~erik/STBC/misc/options.cfg
Also, what is the full name of your graphics card?

This post just made my day!!! Been trying to fix BC for weeks after a W10 update broke it!
