Title: Can't seem to add mods
Post by: richmuaddib on August 11, 2013, 09:30:56 AM
Seemed to work when I played this game 10 years ago, but for some reason I keep getting an access denied message when I try to extract files to data/tgl/etc. I have bcmi and bcmp downloaded for all the good they do.

Completely in the weeds here. I'd appreciate any help

First off, what version of Windows are you using and where did you install the game to?

1. 7 and Vista can't have the game installed in the default location.  there's a refrencenote, here.
2. I believe 8 may not be able to run it at all
3. BCMI and BCMP have been obsolete for years.  you need BCUT, nowadays
4.  Vista/7/8 have admin controlls to worry about.

we definetly need to know your version of Windows

That clearly sounds like UAC being UAC... Install ouside of Program Files directory, and to the exe admin rights and turn on winxp sp3 compatibility mode.

I will advise that that DOESN'T always work, just a heads up. but just leave us the info I requested from you and we will have this sorted.

Thanks for the help folks. Apparently I installed into program files (win7), but with a clean install elsewhere I have encountered no further problems. Nothing helps a frustrating Sunday work call-in like smashing borg spheres and dominion attack ships.

Again, thanks all.

It all depends on the version of Windows 7 you have (including the SP's) and whether or not you have UAC on or off...

God forbid ... UAC is the first thing I always turn off :P I guess I'm not having problems cuz it's x64 and everything goes to program files x86 folder

That could be one of the reasons, although I'm sure UAC, if on on win 7 x64, UAC protects Program Files and Program Files x86....

Yep, that would be it, thus it's always first thing I change on new system... second is Internet Explorer  :funny

care to explain UAC...maybe in a different thread?

I don't advise turning of UAC, it may be annoying but it does provide an extra layer of security to a system.

Windows by default virtualizes following directories: Windows, Program files on 32 bit systems and on 64 bit Program Files x86 and Program files. One can manually remove restrictions from Program files while still having UAC turned on as UAC relies on ACL of a folder this also means that you can manually virtualize any folder.

UAC in itself is not magic, folders like Windows and Program files simply do not allow write permissions for the user group but for administrators only so the folders are therefore virtualized.

Up to this point everyone was on topic as the way I see it people were giving general pointers to the richmuaddib on how to deal with UAC. However this topic does belong to tech support.
