Ship Mass (Reference)
« on: April 13, 2018, 10:57:27 PM »
The "SetMass()" value in the ShipProperty of a vessel's hardpoint file has always been a difficult one to properly balance. This number lets the game determine how a ship reacts in collisions and during pulse/torpedo impacts, so for modders wanting realism, it can be nice to have proper values.

Using the highest quality 3D models of each ship available from the BC community, and a rather tedious method of calculating their volumes using voxels, I've been able to put together this list of many canon Star Trek ships' volumes based on their generally accepted length. Volume =/= mass, but if we assume ships have about the same density as water (1 metric ton / cubic meter) we can arrive at an approximation.

This is obviously not a comprehensive list of EVERY ship in the franchise, but it does include many of the more well known ships. I hope this reference table can be useful for the members of our community.  :D

Good info!  The mass and rotational inertia is a bitch to get right.  I usually stay within the parameters of the stock ships since it's just easier to keep track of and remove some zeroes from the canon mass to do it (for example, a 4.5million metric ton Galaxy class has its mass set to 450 in my install.  The Intrepid's 700,000 metric tons is set to 70, etc.)

Uh, yeah me too. Like Example Galaxy for me had been 150 Mass, 15000 Rotation and turn out fine, especially having a low angular acceleration like 0.15 and max to about 0.45 giving that follow-through flow when turning (grace) or water boat if you will. But, I'll check those out too. It sometimes pisses me off when I can't turn again a BofP or Vorcha as they shoot at me with cannons. So, Turned the speed of the Cannon down to 50 and the torpedoes to 25. Still good speed, they look real from a distance like a friendly attacking your target, those torps look like the show at 25.
