GameSpy Replacement (2022)
« on: June 22, 2022, 02:57:02 AM »
Good.. morning? Yes, it's 2:45am... now where was I?

Ah, yes, the ever problematic master server. What if I told you... it's just that simple? Around the bush I beat. But not for long  :D

OpenSpy. This is the way.

masterserver.txt file:
Code: [Select]
master.openspy.net
hosts file:
Code: [Select]
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1       localhost
# ::1             localhost
157.245.212.59 master.gamespy.com
157.245.212.59 stbridgecmnd01.activision.com
64.225.4.169 gamestats.gamespy.com
64.225.4.169 key.gamespy.com
64.225.19.20 peerchat.gamespy.com
64.225.4.169 motd.gamespy.com

The pudding is attached at the bottom ;)

THE TESTED WORKING METHOD

To host servers, you will need an ethernet connection (wifi has not worked for me), port forwarding of the following ports: TCP/UDP 6500, TCP/UDP 22101, TCP/UDP 27900, TCP/UDP 28900, you will need an updated hosts file for your system32\drivers\etc folder (rename old hosts file example: hosts1), and the new masterserver.txt file (provided below). The masterserver.txt file goes in the same directory as stbc.exe

Simple as that.

I took the liberty to zip up my hosts file and masterserver.txt to make the process a little easier.

THE UNTESTED METHOD (this option contains an edited stbc.exe file)

Due to the nature of this method, I have not compiled a zip containing any exe files, since I am not sure the current status of these types of changes (it has been frowned upon in the past, but I think we are less stringent these days perhaps ???)

There is information within stbc.exe pertaining to the master server stbridgecmnd01.activision.com and changing those informations to match with the master server txt "master.openspy.net" accomplishes the same goal as the hosts file replacement.

At this point, I believe it is user preference.
