Oberth Question
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:11:14 PM »
I can't believe I've never looked this answer up.  I asked myself this question years ago when I first saw the thing in ST:III, but I dismissed it as unnecessary and sort of silly . . .

. . . how the hell did they get from one section of the ship to the other?! :lostit:

On the Ex Astris Scientia article concerning the Oberth's size (for which there are apparently many problems), the idea that there are turbolifts in the pylons is dismissed but no better explanation is given.  A couple of postulates (transporters? Futurama-esque "chutes"?) are thought of, but they seem even more ridiculous than the turbolifts.  Would the designers of an interstellar starship truly intend for a notoriously dubious electrical system to be the only means of reaching the other parts of the ship?

So how do you think they get around?

Either a small turbolift or they use jeffries tubes to get from the living section to the engineering section.
Canon is what people argue exists on ships that don't exist.

The turbolift would be about 1 meter wide.  How scary would it be crawling up 25+ meters (80+ feet) of Jefferies tubes to get from engineering to your quarters every day?

Really not designed well . . . or at least, not designed for featuring in anything but ST:III. :P

who said a turbolift size is set in stone...

I just figured a 1 meter wide turbolift would be uncomfortable as hell. :(  I'm a bit claustrophobic, though, so it might be alright for some other folk.

I always thought that it was an unmanned sensor pod or something, all the habitable spaces are in the upper hull.

Oh, yes . . . a slide would be oh so much fun! :dance :funny

From what I gathered off of the article, as well as the rest of the internet and the TV shows, you'd have to have that area be habitable, since you couldn't fit all of the sets seen in the movies and shows in the saucer section alone.

oh but you could...

Please explain?

The ship would need sleeping quarters for 80 officers and crew.  That would mean most of the saucer section would be taken up by their rooms, even if they were sleeping 4 to a cubicle such as the areas seen on DS9 of the Defiant.  The engineroom seen in "Pegasus" was two decks tall, which would require either of these two options to be true:

1. The secondary hull is accessible easily by way of turbolift or stairs.  This would be required since the primary hull could not contain the bridge (1 deck), engineering (2 decks), the computer core (2 or 3 decks) and the living quarters.  Not to mention all the myriad science areas and other rooms aboard a normal starship.

2. The length would be over twice that of the stated number of 120 m, and instead would be closer to 300 m.  This would allow all of the above-mentioned areas to be contained within the saucer section, and the lower section used only for equipment decks and such.

Of course, the second option is fine, since we could possibly presume that there are a number of different size configurations for a vessel of this type, much like B'Rel and K'Vort BoPs.

Any way you look at it, of course, the Oberth is a nifty little ship.  It seems to fit nicely with the rest of the fleet of the era, yet is small enough to be a scout and science vessel in its primary function.

eh I don't know about that... I think the Oberth at about 160M would be a perfect size for the ship it would fit the max crew number comfortably.

oh and to relate this to the real world... the worlds largest sub the Typhoon Class is

Length     175 m (574.15 ft)
Beam    23 m (74.5 ft)
Draft    12 m (39.37 ft)

and can hold 163 crew

I always thought that it was an unmanned sensor pod or something, all the habitable spaces are in the upper hull.

So did I... And as for the size, I always thought the livable space was just a bit longer than a B'Rel, about the same draft, but over twice the beam...
Also ,don't forget the Oberth class isn't intended for lengthly outings, so most likely there will be spartan living spaces (ala USS Excelsior in VOY: "Flashback"), highly reduced cargo space and little to no recreation space.

shows sections inside the pylons, i think transporters, or the slide, both are easy, and fast

what's stopping them from having decks in the pylons?? they could be their for mechanical access.

Force field based spiral staircase between the disk and the lower bit, going directly through space.

Nebula: how could they have decks in the pylons?  They're only 1.8 meters thick . . .

why do cruse ships have double hulls that can be accessed... those decks might not be wide but they should be able to be accessed to repair equipment.

1.5m^2 of space + holodeck coating = golf fields
