Planet Diameter
« on: July 09, 2009, 08:06:48 AM »
There is already a thread about the limit of the texture size for planets in BC, however I not sure if there is one about this particular detail.

I would like to ask a question: is there a limit for the size (diameter) of the planets and stars in BC?

Well I don't know what the exact diameter in metres, but Ive just scaled a planet for the Transwarp Hub Star System for the DQP using BC's scaling system, and thats 1300 times bigger than it's original size, the original size being an average scaled planet for bc.

So id say the limit is huge.

Ok. Thank you for the information  :). I am planning to create a few new star-systems for my BC and I intend to have planets and stars with realistic sizes, in order to give a sensation of the true scale of the universe.

[EDIT]
P.S - I really like the DQP. It looks awesome! You're doing a great job with it  :D. I was wondering one thing: when you release the pack, would it also be possible to release the Prometheus and Borg ships as separate packs?

Real scale solar systems in BC are extraordinarily troublesome, For on the game cant handle the distances between a planet and its Star, the best i ever got was The Sun - Mercury, before i ran into problems like the "Camera Shaking Bug" further out about Jupiter - Sun, the player becomes locked into position, although it will appear as though you are moving you actually Aren't even when you fire a torpedo the torpedo will freeze as soon as it leaves the tube and be locked in position just in front of the launcher.

I hope you realise/appreciate the mindbogling distance that it already represents? :P

I believe someone once managed to increase the possible size by dailing up a number somewhere, search BC Modding for that.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

Dasher42 made a 1/10th scale Sol system once. That was mind-frakkingly ginormous. Also very accurate. He even made on with all the planets in it. You needed his acceleration intercept to get anywhere in it. I remember hitting 1,000,000km/h on my way to Pluto. Fun times. :P

Ship was shakin' all about, though. At realistic scales, I'd say even the proper diameter of the Earth would start a shake-fest like no other by simply orbitting to the other side.

If memory serves me correct, I believe that the shaking camera syndrome usually starts at about 15,000km from the center of the map with a really noticable difference over that range, say 18,000km. With proper planning, you shouldn't have a problem filling objects, planets, nebulas, asteroids, etc into a 30,000km diameter along all three axis x,y,z of a map. Although 30,000km may not seem like a lot of room to work with, you'd be surprised how much one could fit in that area. At normal intercept speeds, it will take a decent amount of time traveling 15,000 - 30,000km in-game. The only problem would probably be load time of a map that is truely decked out.

Ok, thanks for all the info :). I'll try to keep planet and system sizes down to avoid any bugs.
