DJ, I can't begin to tell you how envious I am that your wife want you to play STO with you...

It drives my wife nuts at the fact that I somehow always manage to find some version of Star Trek on some channel on the TV! She asks, "don't you ever get tired of watching the same shows?" At which I respond "NO, NEVER".

Anyhow, looks real nice.

Wiley, I want to make sure I'm seeing what you're seeing... the top rim around that area is more chamfered than further up, yes?
Yes, and it is also featured on the Art Asylum toy. There's not many good pictures of that area.

She could probably benefit from a slightly darker color IMO but she's still looking great.

Slightly amateurish question:  when you say you're creating the textures in Max, what exactly does that mean?  I think I can navigate my way around the modeling aspects of the program in a fairly productive manner, I certainly never realized there was a way to create textures in Max, too.

The Enterprise is coming along great, by the way!

Well, I know Lightwave has a procedural texture generator, which you can do some really amazing stuff with (IIRC: Destiny from SGU, for example, was sent off to the production team with a reasonably simple set of procedural maps. Infact I think they're exactly what you see on the show.) I've toyed with stuff like that myself for dirt effects, landscapes and such but never really got in deep, though I don't see why you couldn't make things like panelling/aztecs, or why something like Max, which seems far more widely used wouldn't have a much more impressive 2d kit with it.  :idk:

I've always been curious about what Max can and can't do, myself, but the menu layouts and such are just so alien in comparison to what I'm used to. DJ, you've really outdone yourself with this job, while I'm not normally a fan of the designs you push out (personal preference, and Century aside!) your skill is absolutely astounding, dude, and your drive for accuracy while giving canon works a little mark of your own never ceases to amaze me. A real inspiration.

Huh, it's been a while since I gave someone a cookie? Guess that changes today.  :funny

To make textures in Max, I essentially create scenes with flat objects that I layer over top of each other.  So for example, the background color is flat and located at -5 along the z axis.  Then I have hull lines, which are also flat, at +1 on the z axis.  Windows are at +5, and so on.  Then I just render out the scene like anything else.

I've been working all day on this, so I think I need a break.   :hithead:

I darkened up parts of the color scheme a little bit and created a touch more contrast.  Did a bunch more to the rest of the dorsal saucer.

Really happy with the way it's shaping up right now.  I'm going to work on those impulse engines more.  Not crazy about them.  Phasers and thrusters remain untextured.

Those look awesome!  I do agree about the impulse though.  They look a little pink.  I would make them a much darker blood red like they look on the Nemesis Sovereign.  I love the glow of her impulse and the blue of her nacelles.

In FC, during the "Berliose" flyby, the impulse engines looked really cool, very high contrast between the black grilling and the different shades of deep bright reds in the exhaust bands.

Hey DJ, since you seem to have a good grasp on the textures, I just thought I'd throw this out there:  I wouldn't mind seeing you put out more ships with this hull scheme, you know, black ultra-armored-looking parts with a heavy metallic aztecing.  Most of your other works basically branch from the Century class's textures.  I wouldn't mind seeing some 2370's color scheme in the future. ;)

I have that shot.  I'll work on the impulse engines some more tomorrow.

Farshot--> No plans at the moment.  This is a seriously time consuming texture job.  Very tedious, though on a ship of my own it would probably go faster.  I might consider doing my new Excelsior in a scheme like this, since it seems to fit close to the Sov.

In the meantime, check it out.  I did stuff!  :dance  Still have to do those pesky thrusters and some windows near the front edge.  Just wait until I get speculars and bumps on this baby!

Beautyfull ship! I always thought we need a new Sovereign (without offense: the actual CG Sovereign is a perfect ship, but with our new knoledges and newer 3D instruments that model became a little outdated :) )

DJ, every ship you do is gorgeously detailed.  So, what little easter egg do you have planned for this one?

that texture job makes the Big E look like an explorer ship rather than a battle tank
