Title: Valiant Class
Post by: DJ Curtis on June 27, 2007, 03:18:09 PM
Some of you might be wondering why the Ent-F thread has been a bit dead for the past week.  Well... this is why.

I was inspired by the WIP USS Kyoto to produce my own post-Defiant Starfleet Escort class.

It will be a part of the my Delta series pack being released this summer.  Expect similar weapons to the Defiant, only enhanced.  Valiant will also boast improvements in maneuverability and shield strength and recharge.

There will be several Valiant Class ships released.

There might be one update to this thread before Saturday.  After that I'm out of the city for a week, so I'll be AWOL from the forums.  That's why I figured I'd post this now, even though I wanted to wait until it was finished.

Defiants older brother!

Nice job on the model. Will it have the Defiant class USS Valiant's registry from the DS9 episode of the same name? (I cant remember the Valiants registry number)
Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: DJ Curtis on June 27, 2007, 03:49:56 PM
Defiant's younger brother actually. lol

The registry that's on it is the one it will keep.  If you look really carefully at the numbers, you'll understand why. :)

Now i love the Defiant, she is one of my fav ships, but this is what she should of looked like, man great work.
What size are we looking at.
Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: DJ Curtis on June 27, 2007, 06:38:21 PM
Mayhemuk --> Thanks.  As far as size goes, this is similar to the Defiant.  This ship also has four decks.  I'd say it's slightly smaller though.

Moed --> No.  I do not sleep.  Ever. :)

Awesome model you have there DJ. I love how you blended the nose to the body, it was one of the things i did not like at the original defiant.

The defiant rly had 6 decks but they goofed with the MSD on the bridge

Although not specifically stated how many decks the ship had, 6 decks is far more probable then only 4 decks. Especially considering I destinctly recall them being on Deck 5 in one episode :P

As for the new Valiant, it looks awesome. A possible precursor to the Wells Class for sure.

So I take it there will be no last-ditch nose-explosive like on the Defiant Class (Which is why the Nose wasn't blended with the hull)?
Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: DJ Curtis on June 28, 2007, 02:34:30 AM
that's probably a reasonable assumption, yes.
Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: Weasel on June 28, 2007, 04:16:46 AM
Superlative! May I suggest that you consider some variations to the design of the nacelles, and the aft section? I think much of the beauty of this ship has much to do with the more "aerodynamic" shape as opposed to the Defiant, as well as the lighter shade of the exterior textures. She looks fast and maneuverable.

Just please don't emasculate this ship, DJ. 8) The Defiant was a man o'war in every respect, and the Federation has more than enough science and exploration types already.

"I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go into harm's way." - John Paul Jones, USN

Nice work DJ, she sure looks fast!!

What kind of armament will this ship have, is it similar to the Defiant with Pulse Phasers and Torpedoes or do you have something else planned!?.

I ask this because I think you could fit a couple of conventional phaser strips along the dorsal hull. One thing that the original Defient lack was aft firing Phaser Coverage, a definite design weakness. I would expect Starfleet to have thought about this and improved on the original Defiant design (hypothetically of couse!!).

Anyways.... great ship and a great start!!  8)

The Defiant was designed to be more like a fighter, therefore having most weopnary firing fowrads, but aft phasers would def be an improvement.

Also, the phaser strips would probably work.

men like you, DJ, keep this world turning. lol
now that's an excelent cross of a Defiant and a Venture. EX CE LENT!!!!
I wonder if you will ever do an NX version of it. (22nd century) we do need more arcaic vessels.
so we can blast them to pieces with the 25th century ones lol.

awesome work as always.

Ok, silliness aside, I think it's a very sleek streamlined design. My only critique is the underside of the bow where it blends into the saucer seems a bit awkward to me (just my personal taste), however it does seem appropriate given what you wanted to accomplish. Nice work.

Interestingly, one of the lead designers of the TMP Enterprise, Andrew Probert, toyed with the idea to paint a shark's mouth on the 1701's torp launchers.
Check it: http://www.probertdesigns.com/Folder_DESIGN/TorpedoTubes.html
Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: moed on June 29, 2007, 02:37:33 AM
Even though the shark's teeth in the front end would look cool, I vote no on it.

I realize that this is a warship, but I always like to think that even the most potent & fierce Starfleet vessel still at it's core upholds the fundamental ideals of Starfleet and that is of exploration and discovery. This ship is no exception, it just has the ability to protect itself a lot better.
Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: Bones on June 29, 2007, 12:24:03 PM
Well if starfleet would be pure military organization then warships could use such paintjobs but as moed said starfleet is rather exploring & discovery org so I say no for paintjobs although I remember defiant has logo (dunno is it is fan art or true insignia used in movie) with sharks teeth on forward deflector or whatever it is You here it is : http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/emblem-defiant-development.jpg

Exactly. Kyoto it's not an evolution step from Defiant Class. It tooks some of Defiant's tech and mix it whit Klingon Bird of Prey classes.

But this could a be next step in a direct line of evolution for sure...

Hollister, CA?  Is that really the reason you chose that registry?  I can't find another reference to that sequence of numbers, but that seems like an iffy reason.

Personally i think that she should have the DS9 Valiant's Registry with an A at the end.

N.X.-74210-A

that being said, this is a gorgeous ship.  worthy of high praise from the entire BC community.
Title: Re: Valiant Class

The registry number is most of the Defiant's number... just backwards and starting with a 9 to better represent the era.

Defiant: 74205
Valiant: 95024

I don't like the bussards. They need to be boxier & more "predatory" (psychologically intimidating,) such as the ones on the Xenon-Class. Make 'em appear a bit less TOS & more TNG/VOY/DS9 & Beyond.

Title: Re: Valiant Class
Post by: DJ Curtis on August 17, 2007, 01:41:34 AM
I think the armaments will be fairly straight forward.  They will represent expected improvements in strength and capacity.  To be honest, it's still in the texturing stage, and I haven't looked at it in a month, so I really haven't thought about the HP yet.

Great to see how an unorthodox design and efficiency of the defiant would lead to such new starship designs. To imagine evolution of such pocket battleships would result perhaps someday into the Wells-class. ;)

It never really struck me like that.  I like it how it is, but a change will probably look just as cool, considering DJ is making it.

Anybody been wondering why there haven't been any updates to my Galaxy Class in the last week?

Now you know why.

I needed a little break from my Galaxy, and after sitting on my hard drive for the better part of a year, this little baby was just begging me for some progress.  I guess the cold February weather gets me in the mood to work, so I hunkered down and here's the results so far.  The whole ship has been mapped, and is textured for the most part.  I'd like to add a lot more details to it, as well as more hull paneling, especially in the dark areas which have none.  I also want to play with the glows and add some registry lights.  I'm also going to have to do some work to the impulse engines, as I'm not crazy with the way they're glowing.

The being said, I'm really happy with the way the bussard collectors and deflector have turned out.  I made a significant number of changes and additions to the mesh since I last worked on this ship that have smoothed some things out and added detail.  I'm really liking that the ship has turned out to look really predatory.  When I set out, i wanted to make a hot-rod starship, and I feel like I've accomplished that.  When I look at it from the front, the ship looks like its ready to pounce. :D

Anyhow, I've not really released a new ship since the Enterprise-F back in September, so I think I'm going to focus on trying to have this ship available by March 3rd, which will be the 2nd anniversary of the release of my Supremus Class ship.  Just to prove I can power out the ships if I really wanted to.

Here's a ton of pictures.  Enjoy.

What was the minimum postcount in order to be able to give cookies? :/

Anyways, a worthy successor to the Defiant. Although, wouldn't the registry need an "A"? She's not the first Valiant, after all ;)

Hopefully, you'll be able to finish her up by March 3rd, like you said, I can barely wait to take her out for a spin...
Title: Re: Valiant Class UPDATE Feb. 23rd

you should be right with the fact it would have to be "A"
Title: Re: Valiant Class UPDATE Feb. 23rd
Post by: Aeries on February 23, 2008, 03:46:24 PM
Yer' both right, I'm pretty sure she'd have to be the "A". Though I'm sure he'll get around to that. Also, yes, the post count must be 250 to give cookies, at the rank of Captain... at least I think. Somehow, I was able to give cookies a while back while at a lower rank. Not sure what was up with that, but I'm not complaining.

In any case this ship is looking very cool, and I particularly love the shots Dj put together with the Valiant and galaxy classes. Looks very sharp.

And no, this doesn't have to be the Valiant "A".  It would only need an "A" if it had the same registry as a previous ship named Valiant.  Example: The Nebula-class USS Farragut didn't have an A.  The Defiant, though named after the old Constitution-class Defiant, wasn't an "A".  The Intrepid, the Potemkin, the Saratoga.  All of those ships were named for previous starships but had new registry numbers, therefore they didn't get the Alpha-designate like the Enterprise did.

Have cookie # 160!

Great design and product as always.  You've certainly got an eye for Federation ships.  Can't wait to see what kind of ships you come up with when you turn your attention to non-federation ships.

The Valiant is in-game and in the process of being HP'd.

The weapons and shields will all be similar to the Defiant, but enhanced accordingly.

Be prepared... You will need to learn how to fly this ship.  It's a killer, but not if you aren't able to control it.  If you can however, enemy torpedoes will become a non-issue.

Still some texture additions and changes to come, but for the most part, that stuff is finished.  I will be shooting for a weekend release with this ship.

Cool. I'm wondering, could you release it to someone who is good at making movies of BC action, as a means of showcasing your work? Perhaps one of the vaunted members of the BCC Modders Fleet could demonstrate it in action? I'd love to see that.

if DJ had anything new to post about to this mod, he would post an update...
clearly he has alot on his plate with his Galaxy Class, Ent-F Bridge, and all the other projects he juggles while we all wonder how he sleeps lol
so when and if he has updates, he will post them as he has with all of his other threads ;)

(just an FYI - please never ask for updates of any thread that hasnt been posted in a while...  when and if the author has anything to post, they always do...  bumping a thread isnt effective to force input...)

Given that there were a few troubles with the Galaxy, I'm putting the Valiant up for open beta, but just for the next few hours.

If you download it, please make a report back here on the thread as soon as you've run the ship through its paces.

I'd like to upload it to BCFiles tonight for a Sunday release.

DJ, little word please check your Hardpoints,

Their is no main HP for the Valiant, in the main HP folder, their is only the Galaxy and the Venture, in fact the whole scripts folder seems messed up, after sorting through it all I am lacking the Valiants HP.

99% sure most likely, it seems it needs the hardpoint folder sorting out, and those files are NOT in the supplied pack so it's waiting on DJ Curtis now.

This is a great ship, and I got it working in my install.  The ship can't fire pulse phasers.  The Valiant can fire quantum torpedoes and beam phaser, but not pulse phasers.

Oh wait.... :), I just reread the last few postings, it is still a bug that you are working on.  Everything else works fine.:D

Wow! I have been waiting a long time to try this ship out and it doesn't disappoint. Its maneuverability is awesome! It flys around larger ships without giving them the opportunity to fire. I took on your Century class and while it was tough, your Valiant won in the end (the maneuverability that saved me). Love the design for this ship as well as all of your others. I can't think of anything you could do to improve it and there were no bugs that I noticed. Great style! Awesome! Keep up the great work. DJ you have done it again :D

Yo DJ,
I suspect the issues your having with the sounds on the valiant (also with the Galaxy)
is that you may not be including the sound pack that goes into your scripts/custom/autoload directory,
Its just a shot in the dark because im yet to download the Galaxy or the Valiant.
But im almost positive this would be the problem  :?

Had a poke around in the hardpoint to change the quantums because they weren't the best. Changed the phaser sound entries to use the same sound the DJ ENT-D uses. Phasers now have sound. Did the same again to try to get the sound working for the pulse phasers. Changed the entries to use the sound that came with LC's Defiant but they still failed to have sound on them.

Any ideas?

did you change the pulse phaser script itself (not in the hardpoints) that comes with the mod to call for the same sound that LC's Defiant's pulse phasers call for?
for that matter, why not just use LC's Defiant's pulse phaser script for the Valiant if the ones you have arent producing any sound?
