started this doing nothing specific, just a few days ago, but... hmm.... I don't know....
I was aiming this to be a replacement for my old, outdated, ashamedly below-standard Typhoon class, but still, that doesn't have to be so.
opinions?
-
I'm liking the armor paneling.
-
I would say that the armor plating can be effectively textured on. Especially given that it's so subtle. I'm looking forward to seeing more!
-
Nice ship, I would name it the USS Arcos

But why would you name it that?

There needs to be more! I can only be helpful so I know what I'm getting and think up a suitable name. At the minute, it looks slightly like the Mithra...
Hmm. At the minute its looking sleek and maybe designed for exploration rather than fighting...how big is it going to be?
-
opinions?
With the saucer so thick and the lower section designed as it is, it's hard for me to imagine a classic secondary hull on her... perhaps... yeah... I have an idea. throw on some defiant-style nacelles on the aft sides and maybe extend the back a bit to imitate a similar design idea? Then boolean/bevel a deflector into the very bow of the ship, finish off detailing and POOF! You've got yourself a mid/long-range scout.
-
You've got yourself
the kyoto class.
I kid of course, but that's exactly what it would look like.
-
Touche.

no, I'm not going anywhere near the Mithra. and yes, I don't plan it to be a warship, but rather a small scout, light cruiser, or short-range support vessel. something you might use to communicate nearby starbases or stations.
among the size of the Akira, or the Steamrunner.
I threw some more detail yesterday night. I'll post the pics when I get home.

Oh good. Save yourself the headaches, dude. xD

Well...
USS Arcos NCC-6237 Destroyed by a warp core breach near Turkana IV in 2367. Crew evacuates to the planet's surface and is rescued by the Enterprise-D.
It's a legit ship and a legit unknown federation class, hence there's no pictures of the class looks like. Some ship has to fill that role.
-
Hope you don't mind suggestions, I Read the part about the ship being a communicator between starbases? I like the name Orator:- Orator Class, USS Orator
The ship is looking great so far, love the hull plating design, though when I first looked at this ship, Don't ask me why, but the name Orca came to mind lol.

I can't use Orca. USS Frontier already gave me an Orca class to iron out (and never got finished :P), so that's his property lol.
although, is there a Mercury class? I think I heard that name elsewhere.
since it's a sort of "pizza guy" ship, I thought of Mercury, as it was servant of Zeus and messenger of the gods.
if it can't be Mercury, I might choose Hermes, which is the Greek name
here are the pics, with some approach to the profile
I've been seriously thinking on reducing the thickness of the middle section
-
Kind of looks like it might be a sort of scaled-down proto/armored Sovereign class, kind of like something from the Imperial edition of Star Wreck.
-
I didn't see it. just the original :P
I'm leaving it in the "thin" version. ran out of inspiration for now, so maybe I'll come back to her tomorrow.
but, well, at least there's variety for the designation: Orator, Mercury, Hermes, Arcos...
-
All you really need to see is the trailer (it's all I saw anyways.) I find it quite funny though that you have the Imperial edition in your sig and avatar, yet you've never seen it. :P
-
This is just my opinion, but I think "Mercury class" is perfect. Great job sofar :)
-
Just tossing in my trek knowledge but that looks an awful lot like the original concept for the NCC-1701-D's MVAM(Saucer Seperation.) before they cam up with the seperation at the neck. You could do the original idea some justice by saying it is the saucer seperation module for the first prototype Galaxy though it would mean it would need to be made into an MVAM of its own.
Your call, looks cool btw.
-
DJ is correct dude... with ur plating being so small for use of a better word.. why not reduce the poly count and texture it in... it will still look great with those textures.. i think its a great job so far, and i look forward to necelle considerations.
-
I disagree, you can't beat modeled in detail.
-
Sorry been looking for a reference online to show what I meant
sort of looks like here, probert's first MVAM concept

in bc... yes you can. you're better off with a good fake bump drawn into the textures because of the way that BC doesn't shade lighted edges of a mesh even if they not in direct light. It just ends up looking really weird if there are too many of said edges. The number one culprit of that kind of visual deficiency is the tendency to model too much.

Drop the raised panneling stuff and watch your deck count dude, and watch it closely!
-
well... I'm not sooooo skilled at starship texturing, tbh. so I thought of directly modeling the armor.
it's not that there will be a lot of armor, tho.
as for the deck count,... the lower levels below the bridge are, at most, 2 decks high. so the rest of the ship won't be bigger that 15 decks.
it's an overall small vessel. for the measure I took, it's just a bit bigger than the saucer of an Akira class.
