Title: USS Juno -- Now Available @ BCFiles
Post by: DJ Curtis on December 28, 2008, 02:50:39 PM
Named for the beach stormed by Canadian soldiers during the D-Day invasion.

Still a WIP for the moment, still in the texturing process, even still doing a bit of modeling on it, but my intention is to have this totally complete by the end of the day, and playable in BC.

Some of you might recognize this as a small ship from the Delta-4 project that never really was completed.

Also, cookie for the person who can spot what's unique about this ship from pretty well all others. :D

Looking for a January 1st release date for this ship.

Very pretty. Combining elements of the Vivace and the Century. Maybe make the deflector dish more vertical, and make the impulse a teeny bit bigger? It looks kinda squished in its current position.

But great! Would like to see it on the 1st.

I think its quite cute as well. The diddy explorer.

DJ, that's AWESOME!
It's just too cool... I literally think this is my new favorite ship of all... it's so small and yet, just so cool.... :D

Other than an almost entirely integrated secondary hull [similar to the Akira] and the fact that I can see people and furniture through the forward observation lounge windows, I'm not sure that I can see anything that's totally different from pretty well all others... :/ hmm...

Edit: and the modeled really-detailed-inset-windows.

It gives me a Nova vibe, was it intended?  :?:

Another great model, DJ!  :D

Cookie goes to Aeries.  There will be a few modeled interiors just for the sake of artistic flair.

As to the Nova, it was not really my intention to create a replacement.  More a kid brother of the Century Class.

Finally! Someone has made actual interiors as well! I had not noticed. Cookies are in order.

I think this is totally awesome, especially with the modeled rooms! It adds a really cool sense of realism, imo. :)

Edit: Heya DJ, I've gotten an idea from this regarding construction methods, but I'm wondering if, perhaps, you could post a perspective wireframe overlay render of the ship's lower hull? If it's too much to ask, I apologize... just curious to see how you went about constructing the secondary hull and making it mesh so smoothly with the primary. Thanks either way, man. :]

awsome work, as  always :D

Love the USS Juno. It's nice to see that some modellers still appreciate to model the smaller ships, and not always going for the "bigger is better" approach. +1 to your cookie collection for sure.

And yes, this definitely is suitable as a Nova Replacement; Fast, Maneuvrable, Lightly Armed

Not to rain on anyones parade, but didn't someone do that before? I believe on a Constitution class ship. Or a kitbash of it.

yes but not a full interior... just the walls...

It's a nice ship, can't wait to see it fully textured. The Shuttle bay looks larger too which adds to the ship, cause there's not a lot of ships with large enough shuttle bays to hold larger shuttles, like the Marine Runabout that's being made for Example

update.

Some work done on the nacelles, and most of the body is textured, though i will go through it and detail it later.

As to whether or not it's the first to have an interior, I know others have had it before, but i'm trying to take it to the next level.  It doesn't matter to me that much though.  It's really just a novelty.

Also, the ship is quite small, so the shuttlebay holds only smaller shuttles that basically fit through the door and that's about it.

Glad you guys like it so far.  Keep checking back, more updates tonight.

Here are a couple of pix with a shuttle to give you a handle on the size.
Title: Re: USS Juno WIP
Post by: Billz on December 28, 2008, 08:23:13 PM
Is that also a new shuttle I see aswell or just an example?

Also, will you be willing to model the RCS thrusters instead of texturing them on? Would make it just that little bit better I think but totally upto you.

Post by: Kirk on December 28, 2008, 09:37:19 PM
[sarcasm]You should probably cut out the modeled interior. It's just a poly waste and no one's going to see it ingame.[/sarcasm]

I love it! I wish we would have more modeled in interiors. This bears a striking resemblance to the Elysion.
Title: Re: USS Juno WIP
Post by: DJ Curtis on December 28, 2008, 09:41:34 PM
This mesh was actually started almost two years ago, if you can believe that.  As to the polygon expenditure for the interior, they add about 500, and to balance it out I reduced the poly count in some other areas.

Almost done the first round of textures.

As to the shuttle, it's very old.  I did that shortly after releasing the Supremus in 2006.  Just never released it.
Title: Re: USS Juno WIP
Post by: Cmdr. Madden on December 28, 2008, 10:19:05 PM
will the shuttle be released at some point though.... because it seems to follow the century class design lineage

(i think that we should just call it the DJ design lineage, just to make things a whole world easier)

Nice work there. Cookie ^^

I'm not gonna ask what the "Elysium" is...

I suppose that you intended to finish the model for the 1st, not game ready. You never made that clear so you get away with! :P

Great work though, on this and the shuttle. :D

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Update:

I've redone the forward nacelles a bit and added some inlet type things just for coolness sake.  I've also added numerous decals and a second layer of hull paneling on the dorsal side of the ship.

Title: Re: USS Juno Complete
Post by: DJ Curtis on December 30, 2008, 02:21:21 AM
Okay, the Juno is about 99% complete.  I just need to write the readme file and zip the whole thing up.

Did the icon and the tactical display.  All's well there.  Ship description is in and the HP appears to be error free.  The ship is equipped with shuttle launching and will launch 2 standard shuttle craft.  The ship feels well balanced in the game, a match for anything in her weight category, but her limited size makes going up against capital ships unpleasant if you take a few really well placed phaser hits.

The speculars on this ship are a bit more muted than others I've done in the past.  i think once you guys see it you'll agree it looks more realistic now.

sweet. shame we wont see it for a week (next sunday as usual i assume). i really like how the modeled interiors turned out in the ingame shot. theyre not to obvious looking, and add a great depth to the ship. really makes it look less flat

Hmm, it just occured to me that the Juno plays the same role to the Century that my USS Anduril would play to the Sovereign.  Weird. :P
