Title: Remember (some modelers)
Post by: tiqhud on January 17, 2009, 11:33:15 AM
I'm just saying to you modelers, Don't forget about the low-end computers.
Some of those are kids and their parents do not wish to get a big graphic card, Just remember these
are the FUTURE of BC.

Many people (me as well) have a graphics memory, that is strained a-lot with the size of the Textures on BC.

When we load these ships with HUGE textures the FRPS (frames rate per second) goes way down,
causing the ships to jerk and other parts of the game play is slowed down, phaser fire, shield impacts,
disruptor fire, torpedo fire and ship explosions.

Let's say there is a ship of five textures, some have more-some less, but for the sake of the example
let's say five. Ok so we got five textures of 1024x1024 x five that is a-lot (5242880 per ship and
some have Higher) , then there is the bytes used by the displays as you start QuickBattle, then the
textures of the planets or asteroids.
OH forgot the sun textures as well, background textures, nebula, stars.

(and Now the modelers will be mad at me)

Only because what you're saying is a well known fact and has been discussed on many occasions now. :/ That and I STILL haven't had much coffee...

tiq, if you're having difficulty running some ships with hi-res textures, just use a photo editor to resize them to the next lowest level.  For example, all my ships run 2048x2048, but they can easily be resized to 1024x1024.  That will run a lot smoother.

I point you to GIMP, or even MSPaint.

I dunno about GIMP, but MSPaint will not work to resize the image AND keep the alpha channel intact. Not to mention, Paint doesnt support TGA.

Then don't download the model if you can't support it on your hardware. If someone said this to companies, then we'd all be stuck with terrible looking graphics on games like Farcry 2, because "Then everyone can enjoy it". ...Actually... We still have an MMO like that... www.worldofwarcraft.com

I have learned , what to install  and what not to, just trying to save a lot of Grief, cause a newbie is gonna come along and raise cain their ship will not work [as though they have not done already]

The fact is, the gaming world progresses at a rate of knots, you aren't always going to be able to play the newest, latest and greatest stuff, because there is a demand for better graphics, new functions that require stronger processors and the like. Sure, there's a lot of people with outdated computers, but that isn't the fault of the person releasing a mod or game, and they will generally go for the best detail possible to bring their vision into reality.

tl;dr: Someone may not be able to play a new ship or mod because of it's minimum requirements, but it is (Regardless of how you view it) their fault for not keeping their PC updated. :/
