Greetings.
I was looking for insperation today to create something new (starwars) when i decided to look up some trek ships, whilst plowing through forums and other sites i found a canon list of DY ships for TNG. It gave me an idea.
as highlighted in the below image, as a funny.. they decided that Gene Roddenberry, comanded the VK Velikan DY-1200 class, on a mission to explore strange new worls :funny
As stated in www.ex-astris-scientia.org all vessels of this nature DY-500 upward are warp capable, so i decided to make the 1200 in the main mans honour. It sits at 3012 triangles, and is fully unified all smoothing groups are complete. I will start with an msd next. then I will unwrap the model and begin textures.
When done, I will release for BC / SFC and Excal (too say I will make bump maps etc for its use one day)
All ref's and information I have collected from http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org

Hey, thats a very good model. Kinda reminds me of a fish. :P
-
Nice model. Also, there's another in-joke on that list:
HMS New Zealand DY-732 (N) 2135 Bob Lederman Diplomatic mission to Alderaan
Lol, talk about a wrong show :P
Bob Lederman is after Robert Lederman, one of the ST writers ;)
-
Thank you, yes I think all the DY-Ships are a bit fishy :P
So in keeping with that :evil..
the design to be honest is hevily based on the dy-500 http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/schematics/dy500.jpg which was an obvious place to start. I then decided that it needed some basic early necelles and a deflector.. then modified the shape a little.
I also added a shuttle bay to the underside.. now im working on the msd, Im deciding the scale.. the shuttles help with that.
Adonis - thanks for the info, i would never have known that :funny

An in-joke from an unexpected source: West Wing :)

:funny
I love in jokes, thats an excellent find Darkthunder.
I have started the MSD, any help here is appreciated, as its my first.

This is great work, keep it up! But one question, was the DY's at lease 25% longer for your hight? Or is this your take on it?

It was longer, but im putting that down to radiation etc from the rear engines. They needed to place them as far from the crew as possible.
But the DY-1200 has impulse engines at the rear and they are quite safe hence the more stubby compact look. (this is my own take on the era)
thanks.
-
Well since this is your take on it, ........... have a cookie! THis is really great work. But if i could make a small sujestion, don't put thouse solor panel things on, she looks great with out them, thats if you were planing to do so.
-
NOM NOM NOM :evil
thanks,
those extrusions on the rear are not solar panels, when they are textured they will become more apparent as the life boats. Not like modern trek life boats.. these all fire at once in an emergency..
-
SOrry, that was not what i meant, if you look at other ship of that time, like the DY 100s you will see mid ship that the had solor panels. My thought is that since your has warp now, the crew would not need to sleep for the trip and they would have a warp reactor to maintain power, thats what i meant, sorry for the confusing.
-
:funny
thats ok mate. Yeah your quite right.. the solar panels wont be added, the mesh is final. :)
-
Just a little more on the MSD.
edit
last one for tonight.
-
It looks great.
Are you a member at dynaverse.net? They'd love that over there.
-
thank you.
I am yet top post this anywhere other than here.
-
Looks great! Love the picture of how the escape hatches work in case of IMMEDIATE DEATH :funny

Aramus: Awesome stuff!! I always thought the DY series look more like submarines.

Ex Astris Scientia hotlinking never ever works.

Forgot. xD

Just right click the image and copy it's location, then paste it into a new tab/window.
also:
I don't get it.
Edit:
I get it.
-
Or just download the images and attach them to posts like this one:
-
a mesh wip.
I will be starting the msd again as i saved over the psd file :mad
-
One suggestion I would make, is to extend the nacelle pylons slightly from the hull, and make the nacelles more ENT/TOS "round", instead of the half-round style you have now. Would be reminiscent of the Phoenix style at the same time.
-
I appreciate your input,
unfortunately its a bit late in the day for mesh changes, but I will bear this in mind for the VK VOSTOK DY-1250 early earth patrol vessel.
thank you.
-
finished for this evening, textures are about 30% done, im looking forward to the shading and weathering, as since its an old boat, it gives the freedom and artistic licence to go OVBRD :funny
-
Good texture job mate.
-
Brilliant!
-
Very nice ship. Looking forwrd to downloading her.
-
Nice little shib, What are texture sizes?
-
I like it a lot! Great work.
But... aren't those shuttlecraft a bit "modern" for this ship?
-
Nice little shib, What are texture sizes?
texture size is a singular 2048 sheet
I like it a lot! Great work.
But... aren't those shuttlecraft a bit "modern" for this ship?
Yes, far too modern. They where for scale initially, then I got carried away on the MSD. I may make my own very early shuttle at the same size as the Galileo.
(jb76 edit - removed blue color text as it is kinda tough to see against the forum background...)
-
You might want to get the opacity of the panel lines down.
-
Yep, looks a tad cartoonish as it is. =)
-
yea try making the hull a tad of an off-white or add weathering..it's got that shiny new look which looks a tad silly if you encounter one in the TOS or TMP era. ;)
