Title: Alberta Class
Post by: DJ Curtis on December 27, 2009, 02:09:53 AM
After the Incom Class line was decommissioned in the early 2350's, one hull, the USS Meier, was at the last minute kept from recycling.  With components from other hulls in the Incom fleet, a new secondary hull was built for the ship, and a new, single ship class was born.  The Alberta Class USS Edmonton was a fully modernized vessel commissioned in 2359 to conduct long range exploration in the galactic south of the Alpha Quadrant..

The warp nacelles from the original ship had been modified and extended with additional warp coils from other ships, and given a new corbomide coating for additional field efficiency.  A modern deflector derived from the Galaxy class was installed into the secondary hull, along with a new warp core, phaser arrays, and high yield photon torpedo system.

With a crew of 557 people, the USS Edmonton served proudly until it was destroyed in the Dominion War as a part of the ill-fated 7th fleet.

A little surprise for you guys I've been working on over the past two days in homage to my hometown.  I'm heading to Edmonton tomorrow to see family, so I'll HP it on Wednesday when i get back.  Will have phasers as powerful as my USS Galaxy, but not as many or as good of coverage.  Shields will be about 75% of the Galaxy.

Textures aren't quite finished, and I'm still making some minor mesh changes, so constructive comments for changes are most welcome.

Cheers.

Looks like the lines of the Probert design of the Ambassador Class... Nice!

Nice.

To me, it reminds me of an advanced Excelsior-ish design.

I can see some Excelsior influence in it as well. Sweet ship.

Well, how about making the deflector completely blue? thats the common style of that era right?

IMO I say that's the beginning of the TNG era deflector so the color is right.

Very nice DJ.  I seem to remember people asking if you could do an Excelsior-style variant of the Incom-class, so they should be happy with this. :D

Post by: DJ Curtis on December 28, 2009, 01:58:47 PM
Yeah, they did, and I hope so. :)

I actually HP'd and got the ship in game yesterday morning before leaving for the city.  It's fully functional and is nicely balanced for the late 2350's, early 2360's.

I took some in game shots but didn't have time to post.  Will do so when I get home.... on Tuesday, lol.

Was just thinking the same thing. Sort-of as a proper TNG-era Excelsior refit/variant (akin to TOS Connie --> TMP Connie). I.e similar lines, different parts.

Oh, why oh why haven't you showed this to me earlier...that sec hull looks kinda plain, could have fixed that :P And I also second deadthunders suggestion.

That too Excelsior for me.  I want it to be somewhat distinctive since it already looks so much like an Excelsior.

Lol when I look at secondary hull and neck I see PDW Excelsior ;) this ship will be great addition to Lawrence Holland :)

The thing that struck me was something similar to what Berndt Schneider did to his Excel lookalikes. Altho, your ship cannot be an Excel, the sec hull is too short for that.

you could also lessen the curve on the back, the curve looks to post dom. war

I'd say move the Holland parts back some so there is a lip and that the neck would not be flush with the impulse/shuttle housing. Possibly have the same space from the aft saucer to the stare of the bottom saucer dome.

I'd also do something about those cooling towers for the phasers... either add a few more around the ship or get rid of them and just show it with "textured" hull/door plates where they once were. (kinda show the evolution of the phaser system again)

I actually made some changes to the ship since these pics were posted, and the phaser heatsinks was something I dropped for precisely the reason you mentioned.

I hope she's just as kick-ass as Incom-class is.. I could defeat a Keldon and a Jem'Hadar fighter with it with shield damage. Jem'Hadar managed to damage the hull as well, but nothing serious.

Just curious, why are the bussards red? I know it would make it fit in the early TNG timeline better but they were never red on the Lakota and that was in DS9.
Title: Re: Alberta Class
Post by: Cmdr. Madden on January 03, 2010, 02:15:36 AM
but isn't this around the same time or just before the ambassador? so the bussards would be red by that time...

I know that. Thats why I mentioend the Lakota cos that got a big refit in DS9 (Quantum Torpedoes and all) but no nacelle colour change.

Yes I'm aware of that as well but they've got very similar styled nacelles which is why I'm making (now pointless) argument.

I made this video with the beta version of DJ Curtis's new masterpiece, the USS Edmonton, Alberta Class. She is a "well endowed lady" if ya know what I mean. A medium sized ship with excellent phaser coverage, and photon torpedoes with a new sleek design. Though the phasers had no sound, we reported the problem to DJ and he gave us the fix. Other than that, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the girl. She is sleek. And able to withstand a Warbird attack.
Thanks DJ for another excellent ship. She makes a good addition to my DJ Fleet.

Excellent movie. As I asked on Youtube, what's the music you used for it? Sounds very recognizeable, but I can't put my finger on it.

Looking forward to playing with this one.

That almost brought a tear to my eye.  :'( But she's worthy of this video. Perhaps there will be a video of her last moments with the doomed 7th fleet? *wink wink, nudge nudge*  :D

She is a little spitfire.. Other than the lacking phaser coverage in the rear ( isn't really as unprotected as it seems, as Bird of Prey found out the hard way), she is well balanced and ready to take on the universe.

With the lack of phaser coverage in the rear, use the aft shields for a rotation way point to avoid weapons impacts on the weapons covered areas. Shes not hard to work with, though her design takes some getting used to, I just treated her as a Galaxy and used her mass to a turn advantage by shutting the engines down to 0% for a only a second. That lack of rear end, if used correctly, can save your ship.

I'm glad you posted that vid Rifle, I've noticed a large problem. Look at where the pylons connect to the engineering hull (around 2:57). There is a gap which shows the stars behind.

That is not stars u see. That is an Anti-Aliasing problem I have. You can't see throught that. It's jaggedness with the graphics aswell as the GlowFX created that. There is no unusual gaps in this ship, as I checked her from ship to stern before I did anything else with her. Damn glows lol.

I'm a huge fan of the excelsior design and she certainly qualifies the most worthy "refit/design based" i've ever seen.
