Title: Little Help
Post by: ChiefBrex on April 14, 2011, 12:15:59 PM
Anyone have good suggestions on how to model a Galaxy Class style saucer?

Start off with the basic side view using splines, and use Lathe to make it a half or a whole saucer shape. Stretch to make it oval. Make sure you have plenty of accurate schematics to make sure each shape matches up.

I'm using Adam Heinbuch's Galaxy Class schematic. It's the only one that I have found where the hull lines and such actually match up 98% of the time. Other schematics are so badly drawn that the port half of the ship doesn't even line up with the starboard half. It's really sad.

It looks like I may have to create some more tutorials. I tend to do more box modeling. There are definitely more steps required in making a secondary hull, than to make a saucer. I know how to build one, but I don't know how I can put it into words.

Yeah, I was disappointed that there are no Galaxy Class modeling tutorials, or Ambassador ones. Just lots of tutorials on textures.

I was thinking of maybe using a spline to make the secondary hull, and then shape it as necessary.

Try using the same method Wiley suggested for the Galaxy saucer, then boolean cut the angled deflector area and the cut-out at the lower-back of the hull.

The alternative is that you start with a cylinder, which can wind up with little inconsistencies like one ring being out of line. Once the basic shape is done you can just boolean the excess. Works like a charm for me every time.

I know this is an old one, but I think the info may help

For an ambassador class hull, your on the right idea, I would spline the basic shape, then "FFD Modifier" to get it the way you want, then cut the back and shuttle bay out. Then fiddle to perfect. This method is not advised for the galaxy hull, thats a different thing all together and mabey DJ should explain that since he got that so well made with such a low poly count
