Taking a huge break from my HALO modelling, i?ve finally decided to come back to star trek, and since i found a site with lots of star trek schematics, both canon and non-canon, i picked 5 of them from the TOS era and started modelling them. this pack will be released for BC and Excalibur(NFXViewer).
First Ship: Helena Class Cruiser.
a bit difficult ship to model, but i managed to do the saucer and the sensor dome.
i?m open to suggestions, help and other things.

With something like this, my first inclination would be to kitbash something. You wouldn't need to make much, just the neck. And you would only need to modify the secondary hull of a Connie a bit.
Also, if I were you I would check with whoever designed the original and make sure it's okay with them if you port this into BC.
-
and make sure they haven't been done allready. GMunoz was doing one of these packs just before he earned the "fatherhood" achievement, for example.
is this supposed to be a TOS variant pack?
-
and make sure they haven't been done allready.
acutally scratch that king, no one cares if its been done before, i have already done this ship for my tos pack Origins, but its good to have more than 1 type of it, hey look at wiley and dj both did ent E and now baz and wiley doing the probert ambasader prototype
good luck to you mate

good point. i have a LOT of TOS connie variants, and even kitbashed one of my own.

Absolutely, never can have enough of a good thing. :D
Nice work so far.

restarted the model. now its better..... i guess. well, just started the nacelles(doing easy parts first :P )
you would only need to modify the secondary hull of a Connie a bit.
can?t find any open source Connie model around. gonna look in BCFiles. If i can?t find any, guess i?ll just ask modders that made connies to allow me to use parts of their models.(damn, i knew i should have gone to that Sci-Fi ship 3d modelling 101 :banghead: )
-
ask and you shall recive - dont ask and - well screw you lol
-
thanks to WC?s tutorial on making the TOS Enterprise, i finally can do the hard parts, only thing is, im gonna have to leave the video loading all night long. damn you slow internet!!!!!!! :banghead:
-
whats the poly count this is looking to be?
on excal forums you mentioned something like 45k or something?
-
managed to reduce a lot the poly count Jimmy, now i hope to get something between 20,000 to 22,500 polys, both for bc and excalibur, and for bc i plan to use JB06 DLS(Deffered Lighting System).
-
didn't look very hard, Arbiter. you forgot the "no Hardpoints" section. there's a so-so stresspuppy connie in there if your REALLY desperate for a reference (it's the second ship I used).
-
Good luck with it. With a poly count of 25,000 though I would be expecting tons of meshing detail and smooth lines. make sure you are not just wasting polies mate

Ginormus Update(for me at least)
started again, this time watching WC TOS Enterprise Tutorial. Just wish i could download livestream videos, that way i wouldn?t have to load the video again and again.
well back on topic.
Added details on Bottom Saucer
Added Sensor dome and Bridge Module(Without the Turbolift)
-
Noticeable improvement . Especially like the ring detail on the lower saucer.
-
just made the basic neck, modifications will be made after i add the secondary hull.
-
So, this'll be TOS take on Excelsior/Sovereign?
-
No. see my first post. there?s the helena class schematics. that the one i?m making, it?s neck is based on the ambassador class neck.
-
I forgot to mention- whenever you are making a saucer, etc. using the Lathe toll, you will also be generating a lot of extra unneeded verticies. Many of these will have to be welded together.
-
Thanks Wiley. vertices found, weld and poly count reduced.
Before: 14879
Now: 13201
with such a low poly count, i guess that my 22,500 poly limit for this one just went down. problably something around 17 to 18 K.
-
just started the sec hull, and already bumped into a problem. after cutting and making the basic shape of the mesh, i don?t know what to do to close the hole that remained there. any solution?
-
Try selecting the opposite edges and using the Bridge tool.
-
Did you use another object to cut the hole? If so, I have always found it easy to create two copies of each thing I'm cutting, in a situation like this. With the first two, you cut the piece out of the hull. The second set is to cut the cover for that hole by cutting up the other object using the second hull.
And just for a bit of practice and some help in this area, try the MadKoiFish Tutorial (http://www.madfishway.rr.nu/) entitled "Fantails/Shuttle Butts, etc".
