Inspired by the series Mass Effect, the SSV Kitsilano (SR
4 3) is the result of my combining design elements from the SSV Normandy SR1 and SR2 models. This model is entirely built, mapped, and textured by me from scratch, in just around 10 hours so far... though the textures are largely WIP. For the record, it isn't 100% unified as I need to animate it for other projects, but I thought I'd post it here as a prospective mod for the epically bored.
Now stop reading and take a peak at some pics :)

Yay ! what a nice ship you got there  I like the design, might even send you the proper font for name ;)
oh and welcome back mate :yay:

Not bad, not bad at all. Though, are you sure you want it to be a Cerberus ship? :angel

Yes, absolutely. I'm working on a post-reaper storyline that fits Cerberus in as an assimilated Alliance-run operation similar to the USA's Marines.

Thanks. I'll be in and out on occasion, but I'm disgustingly busy with college and work these days, both full-time. I just grabbed myself the font a few moments ago (at least I think it's the right one... "Slider", is it?)
-
Love it. The SR1 is one of my favorite ships in sci fi.
-
Nope it's called Korataki, I don't remember where I got it from tho...

Oh, okay. I found a free version of that ($30 per version of the FONT? OUCH!), but I've been unsuccessful in locating any EULA or anything regarding use so far. The free font does seem legit, though.
Speaking of the font, I have replaced the old with the new so it looks much more legit 'Mass Effect' now. I've also been working on the hull lines and Cerberus paint job, adding the windows, etc... I *think* I got the scale of the windows right? The Kits' is supposed to be between the SR2 and SR1 in size.

It also has that Human Crusier look to it. I like it!
-
I like that a lot. I'm not sure if a ship that isn't the Normandy would be an SR-#, but then again, I'm not sure about the naming and numbering of Alliance ships. Still, I really like the design.
EDIT: Just noticed the third pair of engines, really clever placement that doesn't make the ship look ridiculous.
-
Not too bad? Its what SR2 should have been. You have the eye for design.
-
Wow c'est super :yay:
I particularly like the ventral view. Shadow got in right when he said it was clever :)
-
It's a cute design ! any plans to do Alliance colors ?
-
Thanks for all the comments, guys!

Yessir, though the Alliance model will not be the SSV Kitsilano; more likely, the SSV Burnaby or Edmonton.

YES! It took me a while to figure the configuration... this was the only one that I liked and the funny thing is, the ship looks ridiculous WITHOUT the third engine pair!

SR stands for Stealth Recon, so I'd assume any ship in that line would have it.

I suppose so. Like I said, I'm uncertain about the Alliance's naming conventions. I guess I'm too used to USS *name* NCC-#####.

Another update! I know BC doesn't support bump maps, but I'm including them anyways since this model isn't just BC-Specific.

How about the famous USS Laffey. "The ship that would not die"
-
Still looking good!
EDIT: Aeries? Is this supposed to be SR3 or SR4?
-
How about the famous USS Laffey. "The ship that would not die"
Edit: Yeah, that could very well work for the Systems Alliance version, although I was also considering having the new Normandy follow in the Kitsilano's footsteps.
EDIT: Aeries? Is this supposed to be SR3 or SR4?
As of now, SR3. Originally I was gonna stick with SR4, but it didn't make chronological sense for what I had in mind.
-

So, the Alliance version as the new Normandy? Eh. I say let the name rest until the SR-4. ;) At least you're not considering Enterprise. :funny
-
How about Vanguard? Such a BA name and pretty ME-sounding IMO
-
Thanks, I do appreciate the suggestions. For the record though (for anyone posting in the future), I have a list the length of my torso full of possible names already. :P
Edit: Big update either late tonight or tomorrow.
-
Okay, I lied, KIND OF a big update. But not really.
First, I compared the Normandy SR1 and SR2 to the Kitsilano SR3 and rendered a shot to show the overall design evolution from oldest to newest, and also to demonstrate the size difference (SR1 and SR2 by Bones); I'm fairly certain Bones got the size of the SR1 and 2 correct, so I'm using them both as reference.
Now for the updates. Mostly hull panelling and specular have been adjusted. I'm going to add more black areas to the hull paint later on after class; having compared her to the older ships, I think I drifted away from "canon" with my paint scheme. I'm also going to get rid of the modelled windows and texture in some nicer SR2-ish ones; what I currently have are... less than meeting my expectations -- Much less.
(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz107/Aviras/SSV%20Kitsilano/SSV_Kitsilano_SR3_WIP15.jpg)(http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz107/Aviras/SSV%20Kitsilano/SSV_Kitsilano_SR3_WIP17.jpg)
Any constructive crit from the experienced texture artists here? I've only been seriously mapping and texturing my stuff for the past couple months, so I'd appreciate any pointers.
-
I think the windows are fine, could use some black detailing in places though. I'm no expert though.
-
I agree. More black detailing probably. The nose spikes would look sweet in black/yellow striping. That being said, I really like the grey detailing near the end of the engine pylons. Really blends well. Also just noticed those yellow triangles. Like them as well.
-
If i were you, i would make some panels only slightly darker than the rest of the ship + make the hull dark grey / black just under the first row of windows down to the bottom, it would look like Cerberus SR-2 or you could make a kind of black spine on the dorsal side (black colored stripe running from cockpit to aft of the ship.
Oh and about size i've set SR-2 to about 330 meters (i think i've followed the wiki for this info) and SR-1 to be half the size (I guess they said it to be 150 -160 somewhere. So they should be scaled accurately.
There, I've threw toghether ideas I had about a little bit of contrast on your ship and put em on to your render ;)
take a look

So they should be scaled accurately.
Awesome, so I should be relatively safe, then. :]

That actually looks a LOT nicer than I anticipated... I'll look into implementing that after class this morning. Thanks!
-
To be honest, i think the sr-1 was more like 120 meters and the sr-2 like 235 meters..(joker standing outside of the ship when he shot off some reapers, showed that the ship wasn't that big too).
-
It's a common issue with ships size these days... the scene where Joker stands in the airlock shooting collectors shows us that the cockpit is only one deck while we can clearly see few dozen meters to the middle of the ship that there are two rows of windows and this part of the ship is supposed to store 3 decks (loft - cpt. quarter, CIC and crew deck) ... I remember someone compared Joker standing there to the windows and it turned out that he would be as big as both rows of the windows :P
Not to mention that interior of both SR-1 and 2 would never fit into the hull ... not to mention ME3 SR-2 (similiar situation occurs in Halo - Pillar of Autumn outer hull trench run down to the hangar bay - 1 km long ship suddenly turns to be about 5 km long :funny )
-
Yeah its messed up these days.. When i remembered him standing there, the ship was more shuttle style big.
Also when the sr-1 docked and you were able to walk, the ship wasn't really big, almost 60 - 90 meters max!
-
Not to mention, high detail doors of SR-1 that were not present on actual model :P and yep, the ship was way smaller on the outside ...
-
I even did when i was a "bit" drunk with a mate some schematic stuff, so we walked next to the ship and we said, yeah know we are going from the cockpit to that galaxy mission center, ... and before we knew it, we were already walking against a wall.. The height especially..
-
Well, despite the obvious scaling issues on Bioware's part (they're clearly not accustomed to the OCD present in the majority of the hard core 'Trek fans. :P) I've rolled out another update...
here she is with the updated paint job. There are a few spots I still need to fix, but overall I'm relatively happy. After class, I'll be removing the crap cockpit windows as well and replacing them with something a little more... cool.

-
Looks good, though I'm definitely seeing a few spots that look a bit bare.
-
Looking great, I love it !
You might wanna check SR-2 windows and adpt similiar style, would look ace on her
-

You mean the shape? Colour? "Fake interior view" look? Define "style" for me and I'll look into it. :P

Like around the name, and just below that on the outer part of the engine? I haven't touched those areas much, yet. It's on my list-as-long-as-my-arm. :P
-
SR-2 windows are divided into two main windows and few smaller around them also they seem to be completely black, most likely to avoid fake feeling to it, smaller windows are not all-rectangular in shape.

Referring to the cockpit windows, I take it?

All of the windows.
It doesn't look right like that.

YOU don't look right like that. :dontcare: :P
Nah, you're right.

He means the hull windows. The cockpit windows are getting reworked as well, though; it's just a matter of when I can get the time to do it. X__x College has robbed me of all my sleep already!
-
Bah! As Shepard would say, you can sleep when you're dead. :P
-
no ... actually i meant cockpit :P
hull windows placement looks good, you just need to add some visible interiors to em ;) and maybe make them a bit dimmer

Well... FINE! I'll just go do that then.
Although, i'm rather perplexed as to how to go and add interiors for them. I suppose I could render out some generic interior sets and photoshop them in... how did you manage it? or did you?
Bah! As Shepard would say, you can sleep when you're dead. :P
I plan to, but I need a cat-nap once in a while!
---
Hopefully sometime today I'll have an update on these windowy things.
-
yes, I had to redo them on both SR2 and SR1 as they were pretty scruffy and really dark (on SR-1 they were added by separate texture - all ships in ME1 have this type of glow - separate glow texture with only alpha channel stored in RGB)
What I did was picking random picture from ME2 (just type Normandy SR2 interior in google graphics search) then open the picture in your editor, set brightness and contrast higher then hue/sdaturation settings -> colorise and pick a shade of purpleish blue, make the picture a patern and use flood fill tool ;) (that's how it works in PSP X3)
