PS3 HDD Upgrade What Do I Choose?
« on: March 26, 2014, 12:55:16 AM »
Ok so recently I have begun thinking about upgrading my Ps3 and Laptop HDD have allready bought a new 500gb 2.5" seagate sshd(Solid State Hybrid Drive) apparently it has a 5400 rpm regular hard drive and also a 8gb solid state drive with 64mb cache it's supposed to help boost load times for reguar programs. I bought it on newegg.com for $67.49 wich included shipping thinking I would just upgrade my laptop's hd it only has a 148gb hd at preseent and it's starting to fill up.
Now on to my Ps3 it has been broken for a little over 2 years I finally decided to get it fixed I paid sony $129.00 wich includes shipping to get it fixed they did offer to give me a slim 250gb refurbished unit for just $100.00 ,but my fat 80Gb plays ps, ps2 and ps3 games and has 4 usb ports the slim doesn't have the backwards compatiblity like mine and also only has 2 usb ports. My ps3 broke when I was playing a game it just froze I tried a disk cleaner and blowing it out with a air compressor to see if it would fix it. Nothing worked when you put a disk in it sounds as if it's not even spinning and the Ps3 Os shows the disk spinning icon and never reads it so I think the disk drive is out. After Sony fixes it they give it a 3 month warranty on parts and service the same warranty they would give me for the refurb unit. I liked the idea of having a 250Gb unit and I began looking into upgrading it.
Now on to the dilemia should I purchase another Seagate 5400rpm hybrid drive for it either the 500gbs or the 1tb one or should i look into either a 7200rpm or a solid state drive (NAND Flash) Newegg does have a nice Samsung 120Gbs SSD for $80.00 ,but the max memory ins;t much of a improvement from 80gb's I did find a older Seagate hybrid drive on ebay that spins at 7200rpm but only has 6Gbs of Nand flash and a cache of 32 and it
s $99.00 with shipping. It is new ,but it might not be covered by a warranty cause seagate has discontinued that drive and I think it's a OEM drive so any warranty from Seagate would most likely not be applicable.
I really don't know the difference between 7200rpm and 5400rpm drives I have read that 7200rpm drives run a little hotter and that does concern me. I will provide links to all the products I am thinking about ,but If any of you have any suggestions or know what would be better fit please let me know cause I really don't know anything about this stuff lol. Keep in mind that I allready have the 500gb hybrid on it's way from newegg for my laptop ,but I am still open to getting a differen't drive for it and giving the 500gb to my ps3.

7200rpm drives have better throughput and access times than 5400rpm drives. Simply by virtue of the fact that the disk platters are spinning 1800rpm faster. They do generate more heat but not by much, if you have decent ventilation and keep the laptop and area that you use your laptop clean, then you're fine. The thing that really kills systems is the accumulation of dust.

If you want to see an amazing difference in speed then get an SSD. I know they're more expensive per gigabyte but the speed difference in load times/access times is dramatic.

Sounds good m8 I think I'm going to hold off on a pure ssd even though I did find some 240-260gb ones for around  $117-$140 going to wait till prices drop more before I jump on SSD band wagon.
I am just going to buy the 7200rpm 750gbs 32mb cache 8gb nand Seagate SSHD and throw it my Laptop. Found a Re-certified by original manufacture Seagate for $85 shipped on Ebay comes with a month warranty.
Or I could fork over another $15.00 for a new oem one from China  :dontcare:
I think the 5400rpm 500gb 64mb cache 8gb nand SSHD will do good in my ps3 as it has a bigger cache and also the 8gb nand flash. Pretty much anything newer more advanced then the stock 5400rpm 80gb Seagate ST98823AS 8mb cache is a upgrade lol.
thanks for the advice m8 and have a cookie ;)

Western Digital Black2 Dual Drive is an interesting hybrid on the market.
Instead of using the SSD as an invisible, high-speed cache the two are kept separate.
In one 2.5" unit you get one 120GB SSD and one 1TB hard drive.

Yea I saw that WD Black? Dual Drive 2.5" 120 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD Kit WD1001X06XDTL looks really kewl for a $225+ unit, but It wouldn't work in a ps3 cause the drives come up as two totally different drives well they actually are too lol just m8ted into one unit., After you install there software and firmware the ps3 wouldn't be able to take advantage of it cause of it's Os. I thought about maybe using that for my laptop ,but it's almost 2.5x more the price of the pretty fast seagate 7200rpm sshd. I am just going to wait a few years b4 buying any SSD as the price seems to keep droping as the years go by.

Edit:
Update got my newegg.com Seagate 500gb 5400rpm 64mb cache sshd have to wait till my ps3 gets back from sony to install it. Ended up finding a decent deal on Ebay for a Brand New Seagate 750gb 7200rpm 32 mb cache sshd after bidding on a few and losing the auction both times I contacted one of the sellers that has a bunch of them and they gave me a discount on it. Ended up getting it for $95 shipped should be here in about a 7-12 days and has full 1 year warranty on it aswell. going to put that thing in my laptop and prob sell my old 160gb seagate hard drive with 8mb cache or use it as a backup for my laptop.
