Can you open the files using a hex editor?
Or notepad? (npp sadly boycotts large filesizes  :bitch:)

And I'm still kicking myself for it... from now on I'll be making my backups using the SMF backup feature rather than use phpmyadmin :(

LONG STORY:  Despite ECGadget's jokes :P, it's actually my fault :/.  When I backed up the database, I used the phpmyadmin version instead of using the SMF function.  The database I had backed up ended up corrupt beyond repair without spending bukus of money to get it fixed.  The only backup I had that was stable was the 2015 one I saved two years ago that seemed to work.
