Game runs at ~5FPS. Windows 10. RTX 2060
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:56:12 PM »
Hello,

I've been trying to get the game to work with no luck. I get into the intro sequence and the entire game runs at about 1-5 FPS. It's completely unplayable.

At this point I've tried everything. Reinstalling, using different game files, running in compatibility mode (XP service pack 2 AND 3), disabling fullscreen optimizations. Nothing has worked.

Is there anything else I can do or I am pretty much screwed?

I'm sure there's probably some reason for why this issue crops up for some people and not others, but essentially it just looks like that with newer versions of windows (specifically windows 10) its a crap shoot if BC either runs buttery smooth or like a stuttery mess. Is it a issue with Operating System, Processor, and/or Graphics card? Possibly. Maybe certain combinations of these just don't play nicely with BC's old engine.

Whatever the reason, I've tried to solve these issues for people before with no success. I don't wanna be too final by saying, "you're screwed", but there might not be a solution. Hopefully someone else here can chime in on this?

Wasn't there someone stating that it got a bit better for him after assigning BC to run on a specific core only?

Can you try ticking "Disable fullscreen optimizations" option on the stbc.exe compatibility menu and see how that goes.

Thank you all for the help.

I tried limiting the game to run with only a single core, then dual core, still didn't work. I already had fullscreen optimizations disabled.

Only thing I haven't tried is running Windows XP on a virtual box and running the game through that, I'll get on that later. However I think the main problem is just the modern hardware is getting to be too much for the old engine

Can you try and play the game through DXWnd?

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

Let me know if you need help with its settings.

Late response but running the game through DXWnd solved my problem. Game runs fine through it with the default settings so far.

Thanks a lot for the help.

IIRC default will not be full screen and you might want to emulate full screen windowed mode, so these are my settings that I use.

I'll give this a try as well.

Update: Unfortunately, it didn't work for me.

If it's the same issue as me, you will find the Game is actually running at 60fps, if you move your camera around in the bridge, it's buttery smooth, just all the animations and ship animates at like 5fps.
The only time I've ever seen someone solve this was by disabling VSync and it worked for them, didn't work for me though and others so who knows.
I do know though, before I updated Windows 10 recently, it game ran smooth on the last W10 update, so yeah something in the new OS update is absolutely causing the engine to basically crap itself here.
I think it's unsolvable for now frankly, I've tried everything.
