Dedicated Server Questions
« on: November 12, 2007, 12:16:43 PM »
Good day to you all,

I recently discovered ST BC and having a lot of fun playing this game. I also like the Multiplayer option very much.

But i would like it even more, if i can get the dedicated server to run as i wish it would. Perhaps i'm overseeing something but as far as i can i turned google upside down trying to get answers... unfortunatly with no succes....

And i think my questions are quite simple....

first of all:

- I want to run the server without a gui (Graphical User Interface) this is commonly done by adding some text to the shortcut, but i cannot find any help on that. considering it is not possible off course...

- I am (as i'm typing this) installing the kobmaru patch. As i just read in the manuals and FAQ's i must enable the mutators. I have not done that yet but i wont expect any problems doing so.

If i enable these options, do i get a far more advanced settings screen for multiplayer than with the clean install of STBC ?

The problem is; i have a server here at home, not very good specs but should run the game fine if it is possible to run it without GUI, for this server has practically no videocard.

Can someone please enlighten me on these questions? I would be forever gratefull and in debt to those who give the right answers :P

Thanks in advance people!

hey welcome!

to answer your questions globally, Kobayashi Maru was intended for multiplayer so as long as you install it as it says in the manual you shouldn't have any problems.

as for the server, I don't recall anyone running BC without the GUI. if you want a dedecated server, just set the server and link the players to it. the server won't even load the graphic game, so you don't need to worry about not having a good GFX. it will just run the logic part, while the clients run the graphic part.
but have in mind that the most players you run, the slower it will become, even running just scripts. you will have a small gain in performance, but if you computer is not up to the task, I suggest you drop it.
for a good dedicated server I suggest you aim for something above 3.0Ghz and 1 or 2 Gb of Ram, plus a good network card. that should allow you to run a 5-vs-5 match with no problems.

and as for the screen, the mods are enabled in the game, so if you mean getting an advanced config screen in the means of network parameters, I'd say no. but you will get more game modes and new ship menues when you configure your match.
all the configuration is done via UMM, in the main menu when it comes to graphics, mods, and controls. if you want to enable or disable mods, that's done via mutators also in the main menu.

If you want true Dedicated Server, then no, impossible with BC.
Atleast without a lot of eula and copyright breaking and a lot of work reverse engineering the protocols.
You will always have to load BC.
Aside from that, expect to restart BC every 3 to 4 hours.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

Thank you for your detailed anwers.

I have installed the patch as mentioned earlier. But it all seems a bit confusing and unstable to me. I discovered the Multiplayer does not run without the GUI but that is the least problem I encounter atm.

As I try to restart my single player mission. I discovered it does not save my progress unfortunately. The ships and maps that came with the patch are great though!

If I host a multiplayer game i will not use the Server i have, it does not have the power (scotty pun intended :P ).

I guess i have to open some ports on my router in order to let you guys enter my server?

I must say, I am really in love with this game and i hope i can solve the problems I have seen right now!

Captains log,
stardate: -315134.1248097413

I installed a fresh install of STBC next to the patched one. Opened the ports 22101 and 28900 TCP and UDP on the router and the game i hosted was open to the public. so that worked like a charm ;)

As far as I am concerned right now, the Kobmaru patch is not working 100%. No hard feelings on that, but a shame though, I liked what I saw in that patch, but it simply does not work for me.

STBC became very unstable because of it.

I will seek some nice loose patches i might use for my game settings, and hope for the best of it.

I had a nice test run on my server with a friend of mine. I had to shield it off with a password, because we got constantly killed by other, more experienced players :)

One was kind enough to teach us some basic skills ... thanks for that!

Well.. so far Captains log

Signing off for a well deserved rest!

BC becomes unstable anyway in Multiplayer, mods don't affect it gravely.
