New Guy needs help!
« on: March 13, 2008, 04:59:00 PM »
Hi, this is my first post here so excuse me for my n00bishness

Ive not long ago decided to try my hand at modding for BC, so with some help from college lecturers
ive managed to get both 3DS Max 9 and Photoshop CS3

But could anyone point me in the right direction for any plugins i'll need?
The only .nif importer/exporter i could find for 3DS Max was on sourceforge but the file is corrupt and wont
install

Any other help would also be appriciated, whether it being advice or links to good tutorials

Thanks in advance  :)

Not so sure much more advice can be given; you came to the absolute perfect place for this sort of thing (I was a noob [technically still am] just last december. Lol)

Welcome to the forums! :D

Thanks. :)

All I can suggest for the NIF importer/exporter is perhaps downloading it once more and trying it again... I don't know what that site is like, but you could try a few different mirrors and work that way. Otherwise, there is a *.nif import/export tool for Milkshape 3D what works marvelously. I think it's posted somewhere on the forums here or on BCFiles. Not sure. Maybe somebody else has a working copy they could send you, too. Again, not sure how it all works yet.

his issue is that he doesn't want to purchase milkshape when he already got himself a copy of max for free... could be some help if you read that bit... but eh, I'm no moderator.

Anyways, you could also find somebody with that plugin who could possibly send it over to you if that site's download is corrupted. Or, alternatively, you can also possibly find somebody who may be willing to port the models for you.

I'll keep searching, i think there were a few older build versions of the plugin anyways so i might
try them too

Worth a shot.

For future reference, too, and for your benefit... now that I really look at this thread, it's probably better suited for the tech support forum. I say this particularly because it has more to do with locating files and addressing the issue of you lacking something rather than the development of a mod. ;) Just thought I'd say, so you don't get in trouble later on! Haha!

Also, in this modding forum, there is a lot of very useful information in the stickies. I'd strongly suggest you check those out. An example would be blaxxer's UVW Mapping tutorial... thanks to him, I think I actually have a fair chance to texture the Mithra.

So yeah, there you go. :)

 8) Indeed, good to see you've acquired what you sought.

Best of luck with your exams, dude. :)

Ok, you don't need any plugins.  All you have to do is backport the max 9 file to .3ds format, and have someone with max 3 export the ship to BC.

Have you managed to model anything worth exporting? Might as well attach something if you have.  We enjoy screenshots :D
I just realised something. I've released over 300 fully modded ships for bridge commander. Bow to your master :D
