Author Topic: Federation Starbase (Read 5056 times)

I got an itch to make this base tonight, mostly because all of the other Federation starbases are way too big; the Federation starbase should be 4600 meters wide at the widest equator, and should be around 7000 meters in draft - this base reflects these dimensions and follows the TNG shows (recall the large size of the docking bay on the Federation starbase in the shows).

This model has 18158 triangles and is very detailed; I definitely need to widen the docking bay by 50% since it looks like the SNS Galaxy (the base is correctly scaled to it in the screenshots) can barely fit through it with its wide saucer. I also think that the sensor antennae on the top are too thin, and the big central structure inside of the base probably could use some tweaking as well.

Anyway, I'd probably like for some one to smooth this out in 3DS Max and texture it, because I don't have much time for texturing lately.

Uh, I don't know - some one else is going to finish this because I'm way too busy - all my modding activities right now are in short, intense bursts with lots of other real-life crap in between. This thing still needs a lot of work; I may also try to knock out the Federation Station and Regula Series as well in the next few weeks.

:| I'm sorry, I know you're trying to scale this to the SNS Galaxy, but that door is messed up big time. Honestly, the entire top half of the mushroom looks wrong...sorry mate, but even if someone finishes it, I probably won't be using it.

I don't think starfleet would bother to rebuild doors for bigger ships in TNG (maybe one or two), these bases had 4 doors, I always thought that each doors were fited to adequate size like : the smallest doors for ships like oberth, medium doors for ships like constitution or excelsiors, large doors for ships like akira, nebula or even ambassadors and the biggest doors for ships like galaxy, sovereign (tho this one would fit through large doors) and excalibur, such use of doors would be logical as they wouldn't have to rebuild them for bigger ships than before (ambassador -> galaxy -> excalibur)

All 4 main doors are the same size. There is more than one size of starbase. Spacedock which orbits Earth is not even half the size of Starbase 74.

For some random reason this is as close as I could get to getting the two together. >_>

Elminster; thanks for those images - some of them are really excellent!

Anyway I got to do a little work on the base tonight, and I believe that I have completely fixed the inside docking area, and I have also drastically reduced the size of that terrible door from before.

The top of the base is still an abortion, so I need to give attention to this - I will probably detail it exactly like the images that Elminster sent me.

Anyway have a look - with the new narrower central part, any size Federation starship from all eras will fit into the base easily, even the Federation ship in my BC install with the largest draft, the Europa-class!

Enjoy the screenshots, and give me some more input!

Very cool. I'd love to see more of a ST:3 interrior, though; Somehow the single pylon in the center of the base has always bugged me... there was never much detial or anything with the other bases' interrior. Bottom line being, personally, I would LOVE to see more stuff inside there, like the (docking births?) and the sort. it would be REALLY cool to ahve a really detailed base to go along with DJ's new Galaxy. Think of the POTD possibilities! *drools all over keyboard*

In any event, you've done a great job so far, and I do like this more than the previous models I've seen. Keep up the good work, dude!

Just wait until you see the comm array at the top once it's done; it will however push the polygon count to over 20000 though.

On a serious note, love what your doing here... about time for a new starbase, but as said the top dome thingy needs more work
