If it's a render, it could do very well with some normal-mapping....

Yes, Normal Mapping. This is done pretty easily via the great tool CrazyBump. It might need abit tweaking afterwards, tho but nothing too fancs, it can all be done within the program itself ;)

Give it a try :)

There's a very slight difference between the two, but bump mapping is the general term for it all. Personally, I don't think it's needed here, often people will over do it (particularly panelling work on spaceships) and it will look wrong.

Well, I don't agree with you here, see the attached image...plus, doing normals is just a breeze. But, don't make them too strong ;)

I have to agree with blaxx, normals would help to make it look better.

First off a few little tips for Meteorafallen:
Doing good rendered images isn't the same thing as improving quality for BC meshes, this means improved diffuse- and specular maps simply won't cut it. Try to add a little depth to your model with bump- or normalmapping, to to get the lighting interesting, a few white omnis may do the trick, but a multitude of lights to emphasize the light emitting bits and pieces of the mesh make it look much more real and, lastly, add some glows :)

Okay, I did a quick render with normals and improved lighting to show you what I mean:

BlaXXer, dude, darn nice work there. :D The Enterprise F looks bloody fantastic... though the bump mapping (if I'm even referring to the right thing here...) Looks inverted of what it should be; at least on the bottom of the ship. What I mean is, it looks concave, rather than convex as I believe it should be? Just in a couple spots, anyways... :/ Or I'm just so excited to see such a beautiful Enterprise F render that I'm seeing things that don't exist. :P

I totally wanna use that second pic as a desktop background... :D

FYI: Rendering is the process of converting abstract mathematical data stored by a computer into a 2-dimensional image that we can interpret. Your monitor and internet browser is rendering now, your game of Bridge Commander is rendering a new scene upto 50 times a second. It has nothing to do with the quality of the output product or the presence or absence of particular techniques used in the rendering process.

Thanks for pointing out one blurry formulated part of my sentence ;) I stand corrected and edited my post to clarify :P
