NOOB, would like help!
« on: May 14, 2008, 09:01:42 PM »
hey every one, my names phoenix, been here a while but not really an active messenger. i am in the middle of building a romulan crusier for the tos era, i have the basic setup of it finished, i just basically would like some information to help me make my textures better, now this is my 2nd ship ever from scratch and i my self am quite pleased with it, i would like to say that i did not design this ship it was for sfc1&2 and i could not reach the author, so here is my Romulan Battle bird

Pls dont be too harsh, im trying to learn lol

Not bad. You could try to aztec her by hand instead of using a generic blend pattern, and make the darker shade paneling on the wings smaller, and 2 staged.

Good work so far.  Your textures look fine.  I have to agree with Adonis- maybe add a slight aztec pattern to add a little bit of detail to the hull.  The best resolution for textures are 1024x1024 or 2048x2048.  I really like the thrusters on the back of the saucer module.

I ment to make it look like a checkerboard with 2 stages and thinner, I bet it would look cool. For the Aztec, first, get rid of that blend pattern, use a little darker shade than the base color, and start drawing them by hand (I draw aztecs by hand lol). It's a lot harder to do, but it's more rewarding and looks a million times better than generic overlayed stuff. And since she's a TOS ship, I'd make the aztec barely visible on the diffuse maps and bring them out on the speculars. Oh, and do speculars in greyscale, it works well on Rommies.

No way, wicked i was doing specs on grey scale :D ok, so how do i shape the aztec? i know somthing like polor cordinates, but i dont know how to set them up and where to draw the first part

If you are using Photoshop, then it's simple, mark them out using polygonal lasso too, and if you're using something else, then I can't help you with that...try finding something in those progs that fit that description lol

As for the aztec patterns themselves, look around on newer Rommie ship classes and try to "dumb them down" in appearance lol :)

ahh, that is a nice look'n hlai variant. I would also consider green drives and more classic colored bussard than red.
I just realised something. I've released over 300 fully modded ships for bridge commander. Bow to your master :D

No it is not mine, but I have the readme for the original hlai and it belongs to commanderjones. I might have a way of digging him up because he sent me his ships directly (assuming I've kept the email..it might have been on the other computer) but atleast I have the original ships. Good job on the green variant too. Keep'em comming ebcause we need romulans.

there are some I converted by kthyla. Perhaps you could expand on those designs? Tagor talla and temar hathos I believe are the names. Improved models (with 3-6 textures rather than 20+) and more polies as well as more classes would be kool. For instance, you could do a refit of the tos one you made above.

Both paint schemes of the cruiser
http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Starforce_productions_Tagor_Morlatta;53495
http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Starforce_productions_Tagor_Talla;53496

and the 2 of the destroyer:

http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Starforce_Productions_Stelam_Hathos;53517

Kthyla also made more advanced versions, probably pussing into late excelcior era or ambassador era:

http://dhost.info/phoenix/warbird.htm (no bc version)
http://dhost.info/phoenix/v44.htm (no bc version)
http://dhost.info/phoenix/dvas.htm (this I thought was avail for BC)
http://dhost.info/phoenix/sindari.htm (fighter)

The no bc versions ya gotta go by the pix unless ya know how to import, I've not had the chance myself..KA is a B**** to convert.

If you want TOS ideas:
http://dhost.info/phoenix/scrnsht/orec.jpg
http://dhost.info/phoenix/scrnsht/orcl.jpg
http://dhost.info/phoenix/scrnsht/orcv.jpg
I got no plans for the carrier but the double warbird and the ringdrive are available for BC in the TOS supermod enemies beta on bcfiles.
