Help with Luke's Widescreen Tutorial On BCF
« on: August 08, 2008, 05:50:49 PM »
Hi all.

Right I downloaded Luke's Tutorial and edited it, spent half an hour trying to figure it out why BC crashed, today I learned on BCF that you use Notepad +++ to edit Options.CFG.  I have obtained 1680 by 1050 and the game loads to the menu..... and that is it... any attempt to load QB causes an immediate CTD.

I have tried the res of 1440 by 900 and 1680 by 1050 both of which are the only ones which look half decent on my 20' panel.  1280 by 720 loads for me but half the menu's are off the screen, and 1280 by 728 won't load at all and results me to a DirectX Render error.

If you restore the size to a standard BC size, does QB then load?

Also, could you provide a link?

Btw, Notepad has been known to not deal very well with various files other than txt files.
Options.cfg isn't a good candidate for Notepad because it contains so called "null" characters.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

Yeah returning to standard size the game loads * just checked *

Using NotePad +++ to edit the Option.CFG at the moment which has been a huge success.  Been on WLM with Neb and tried 1600 by 1200 which fails with a D3D error.

You may need a reboot then.

But 1600x1200 is a normal, 4:3, resolution. So your monitor may not support it, and get a D3D error for that.

Unless you are talking about windowed-mode, then it may not work at all (widescreen settings), and just possibly, also not 1600x1200, but a lower one might (in windowed-mode).

i run 1440x900, and in windowed mode the max i can get is 1024*768...  i just figured it had to do with my crappy gfx card lol
i cant even get mine to run at 1600*1200, i am stuck with 1280*1024...
tho i have tried 1280*768 or 720 or whatever it is, but some of the hud displays are a slight bit out of place...

Nope still, loads into then the menu fine, but loading QB it loads up and then the moment it's to switch to the bridge and the ship it gives me a crash.

I'm afraid I don't really use WLM these days anymore, too many people just adding me and WLM can't seem to keep my sorting intact. :(

The question is, are you trying this in Fullscreen mode, or in Windowed mode?

I got it to work in fullscreen at 1280 x 720, but only because I changed my nVidia Card settings. I told it not to automatically scale. I loaded up QB, and it works very nicely, no stretching whatsoever. I'm not sure what the ATI/Intel equivalent is, but this works for me.

I'm, having a very weird problem. BC just ignores my changes. I change options.cfg to 1280*728 in notepad++ and when I load up BC it just outputs in 1024*768 and resets options.cfg to reflect that. I made the file read-only and BC still ignored my changes. I am currently in stalled in Games/Bridge Commander/Custom so it's not a virtualization problem.

Try doing those changes, and set it to be in fullscreen (similar setting in that section, change it to 1).

Worked nicely. Just out of curiousity. Why did that work?

BC is very, and I mean, very, picky about resolution sizes.

It was never designed to work with sizes other than 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x728 ane 1600x1200.

And 1280 by 1024... I've been running it at that for ages now ;)

I wasn't sure, anymore. :P

In the scripts, everything goes by the width, so if your screen width doesn't match one of those numbers, then you will get the GUI for 640 (it's the default).

Shame it won't have anything to do with 1680 by 1050.

You can try it, but you will get 640x480 UI graphics.
