Anyway do I need special permission if I want to play around with in in a 3D rendering program?
You will only need to ask permission if you were going to release any modifications/ conversions to my meshes/textures. And always give credit to the original authors.

Long time, slight update. School is really bogging down my 3D modeling time (I do have a few WIPs, but not enough to show here), but I was able to sketch some alternate designs for the front of the Sambreign-class engineering hull. Right now, the ship looks kind of plain and needs more detail. I really want to get this ship done by the end of the year.

Not a major difference, as far as I can see, but I think B looks better.

I think it would depend a lot on what you did with the textures. B looks cooler, but A looks more streamlined/solid.

what kind of ship is this, i mean defined by its purpose, it looks like an awsome design, im just confused as to its role within starfleet.

Well when I last talked to him about it, I suggested deep space exploration cruiser with slipstream drive.  Had to do with it being the next in a certain line of starships.

She already looks a beauty Willy! It?s awesome how much detail you put in a medium polly mesh.

Looks awesome Wiley!

Hope you do blank textures for her when you finish. I'm also willing to take a stab at texturing her if you like. :)

Are you planning anything like saucer separation for this design?

I'm pretty comfortable in texturing my own ships, but whenever I get to that point, I may consider it.

Yes.

I just realized that you noted you were considering saucer separation in your first post on the ship design. My bad for being dense and not noticing lol.
