model smoothing question
« on: November 18, 2008, 09:44:35 AM »
Hi quick 3D max question. I have build the secondary hull in say 3 sections and mesh attached them together making it look as a solid hull. My problem is when I try to apply some smoothing all the attachment lines all concave and the solid breaks appart and looks like 3 parts again.

is there a way of attaching mesh object so that max sees them as one object instead of 2 joined parts?

Are you welding the verts? That's the only thing I can think of that would cause it to still look like 3 sections.

I've attached the meshes then welded the verts and when I apply meshsmooth it looks even worse than before ???

It doesn't look welded.

so, the round and flat pieces are two meshes. and, as I get it, you attached one to another.
remember that "smooth mesh" is not the same as "smoothing groups". I have that figured out since my headaches with milkshape :P

try aligning the edge of the flat pieces as close as posible to the border of the other piece, then cut a few poligons to create vertices that you can link with the flat part.
then, weld that section, and then smooth it out.

sort of this.
