Here is a Max scene file with the atmosphere I use. Try it out if you like. You need Max 9 or higher.
This one can be shot from any angle. It reacts the same way as a real atmosphere so if there is no light or if the light is at the wrong angle, you won't see it. So position your lights accordingly.

From a quick glance at the material, that's exactly the same as what Dalek had. Wonder why his wasn't working :idk:

Hey, you're the one that said I should be happy with what I have. :P

I was lying :dontcare:

:P

Hell yes!

More shots of Wing Commander ships. My personal favorite is the Banshee, shown in both shots.

Here's recent render. It took me a while to set up due to many weird things with the models. Lighting was never set up properly for either so I had to tweak them.

Where did you get those two models from?  The DS9 one is particularly interesting, since all the greebles seem to be built on instead of textured on.  That's one high-poly model! :eek

The poly count for the Sovereign and DS9 models is close to 1.2 million and 570 thousand respectively.
Both models are from http://www.trekmeshes.ch/
The site has a great many models and in different formats.

Vlad's shot looks like a very early TNG episode featuring a post-Nem ship . . . :D

Im happy you like the render. Btw, I used Lens effect focus to blur the planet and the atmosphere. Here is another animation by me.
