They're Omni Lights with Lens Effects (Glow and Ray) applied to them.
Build a game and people will be happy for a few years. Build a community... Well, look at BC. :D
Here's to another 20 years!

facinating, personally i use photoshop and create circles (using the oval tool thing) increasing in size (i also smudge them for that torpedo effect) and colour intensity then whack an overlay on all the ones except the bottom layer, the end result is something like this (this was like... My first attempt at it):

Opinion - The torpedo and phaser effects suck.

Fact - The phaser has no taper affect, so instead of feeling 3d, it feels like someone drew it on.
The torpedo doesn't look like a glowing projectile.  It looks like someone stamped the picture with a star.

Hey, it may be opinion but its still rude to blurt out exactly whats on your mind. At least tone it down to say "The torpedo and phaser effects aren't brill".

Fact - What FarShot said. And perhaps add a glow to the beginning of the phaser to make it look like it's being emitted from the array, just like in BC (I could say Trek as well :P).

Yes, but you also need an eye for composition/lighting, it's the bread and butter of any image.

I'll get there eventually (hopefully). At the moment, I'm just playing around and having fun with it. :D

Blunt, but accurate, however i did state that it was a very early attempt at it, i have a friend that introduced me to the technique and he... Is... Well... Better at it.

Well here's one I did manage to do.  keep in mind, poser is a little more restricting because I can't model thinks on the fly.  I used a flat plane with the ZZ quantum texture and a point light for each torpedo.  then as you can see in the first pic, I added a lens flare in Photoshop.

yeah, I know, those lens flare's are a pain.  This was only a test anyway.

Yeah I already tried that Kirk, only I have 3ds Max R3 and that's not in the list to select during the install/extraction.

I could be mistaken, but I think GMAX can import .obj, and it's free.  I know for a fact that milkshape can import/export both .obj and .nif, that's not bad, milkshape is a bit basic compared to GMAX and MAX, but it's really cheap, and has a 30 day trial period.

BTW, here's a phaser beam I put together in photoshop.

Not a bad looking phaser there ACES, but I never like adding things like that in post because then you don't have the proper light reflecting off the hull.

yeah, that one was a quick job, mainly I was experimenting with the beam itself.  If I was more serious about it I would have used a light effect too, which you can see on my earlier Sov render.

guys from here on out, please upload pics instead of hotlinking them...
the images are much too large and it causes the page to load much longer than necessary...

thx :)
any posts containing hotlinked images will be deleted from here on out...
the only exception for hotlinked images are those images which aren't very large in size, then those will be allowed...
but any large images hotlinked will be deleted...

thx :)

^on that note^ :arms:

here's a new one I just did in poser, with a whole bunch of BC ships.  I totally didn't intend the BSG vibe this thing's got, but I think it's awesome.
I could have put a space park in there and it would have fit right in.

I almost forgot, the "Colonial Movers" type ship was designed by Richard Merk, he's got a ton of awesome ships like that.
