I actually gathered some inspiration from Colony Wars Vengeance for that part. See, in the game, when the player is in any system, there's a small nebula-type effect (in the Sol System it's blue, in another system it's green, etc.) that adds a bit of ambience to the environment. I was trying to mimic that effect, but tried to make it more subtle.
Attached is an example below, where the player is defending a space station in a friendly system.
