Choppy game after 5 minutes
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:27:14 AM »
Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forums, so sorry if this question has been answered already, but I do have a question. I recently got an urge to dig up Bridge Commander and wanted to play so I installed it on my newer laptop. However, for whatever reason, about 5 minutes into a mission, the game gets extremely choppy to the point that I can't move around effectively anymore. This happens all the time. I've searched around and have heard that maybe having a dual core processor is to blame, so I tried running the game with only one CPU being used to no effect. Can anyone help?

Thanks guys!

Do you have custom bridges installed?

No, this is after a clean, stock install of Bridge Commander. I just can't understand why a newer, "better" computer can't handle Bridge Commander when my old desktop back in the day could.

Oh and if it makes any difference, my Armada II acts in the same way and I can't figure out why.  :(

What is the specification of your computer?

It's a bit strange that it degrades over time if it were a problem of speed.

Have you tried running in Windowed mode with the Task manager in the lower right corner on the tab with those graphs, while you are playing, please take a look at what they do, after a mission has started it shouldn't increase much untill you get to a new stage in the mission.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

Here are my computer specs:

Processor: Intel? Core? 2 Duo processors (dual-core)
Clock Speed: 2.16 GHz
Main Memory: 4GB, 667MHz,DDR2 SDRAM
Disk: 100GB IDE Hard Drive ? 7200rpm spin rate
Video: NVIDIA? Quadro? FX 350M 512MB TurboCache* OpenGL PCI Express GPU

I think you're right about the CPU usage thing. Normally, my CPU usage is around 20%, but when Bridge Commander is running, it spikes up to 100% and stays there! What's going on? In the mean time, I'm going to run a virus/spyware scan to see if they are to blame for eating up my processing power.

It shouldn't be 100%, since you are using a dual core, but 50% at most, for BC, but considering your normal usage is 20%, it may just as well appear to be 100% after BC is running.

Do all missions have this problem?
What is on screen when it slows down?

And does the memory graph go up as well?

BTW, BC will try to claim as much CPU as it can get, on a dual core, that is 50%.

Nevermind-- I think I got it. It was only with that first mission. I installed the kobayashi maru mod and then just selected the missions from there and no problems.
