I didn't see a thread for this, so I'll start one, this is for Trek merchandise outside of Star Trek XI(unless the mods want to merge the two). I'll start this off with the Star Trek Hot Wheels, and my recommendations for them. The first "wave" consists of three classic ships, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Refit from TMP, the NCC-1701-D, and the USS Reliant, with the promise of other ships coming soon. The other ships(one of which is now released) are the USS Enterprise(nu-Trek), the Narada, and the Klingon Bird of Prey(which is released). I do not have any of the ones from the first wave for reasons I shall outline shortly, and I do have the Bird of Prey which I shall review after the "preview" of the first three.
The first three are of varying quality as far as accuracy goes and they go in this order from worst to best: TMP Enterprise, Enterprise-D, and Reliant. The TMP Enterprise just has far too much wrong with it detail wise. The upper saucer now has an aft firing phaser bank that wasn't there before and the banks aren't even painted. The NCC-1701 is too far forward on the saucer from the USS Enterprise, and there are several bits of misc details that aren't painted on. While bigger than the Johnny Lightning 1701, I would recommend that one over the Hot Wheels one. The quality of the ship was a deal breaker on that.
The Enterprise D fared better. Not only does it have more show-accurate colors, it also has the advantage of having saucer separation. It looks accurate to the show. Unfortunately, I'm not that big a fan of the Ent-D and therefore didn't buy one, but if you like the Ent-D, this is a fairly good replica to buy.
The Reliant looks like the best of the bunch. All the things they did wrong on the 1701, they did right on the Reliant. It looks very movie accurate and well built. The only reason I didn't buy it is that I already have a Johnny Lightning Reliant, but I may get it at some point anyways.
Now, for the one I actually have. The Klingon Bird-of-Prey. This ship has been rendered in so many different toys, all with varying grades of awesomeness, but this beats them all. Despite having plastic wings instead of die-cast like the rest of the ship, it's made that way for a reason. The one thing that pretty much every non-model version of the BOP doesn't have is the moving wings. Though one of the "Action Fleet" ships had the wings move, it wasn't quite right. The Hot Wheels BOP has wings that move into the EXACT positions from the first movies. It arrives in box with the wings folded up into "landing mode". I expected them to fold down and lock into attack mode, but it surprised me by stopping halfway down in the "flight mode"! From there, of course, it went into battle mode. This is a really cool touch and it makes me very glad I bought the ship. The paint job is well done and very Klingon, and the engine is done in a translucent red. The stand is also a nice touch. It has a black base with a translucent red upper part and is shaped in the Star Trek delta and on one side the stand has the Klingon emblem. The stand has a ball-socket so that the ship can be posed. I highly suggest this ship, it is just plain awesome. 8)
I will have reviews on the Nu-Trek Enterprise and Narada in the Trek XI merchandise thread once I have them in hand, but hopefully they're good.
